Had a conversation with a fellow cinemaphile and we were trying to determine which directors had a pretty decent track record from beginning to end. Here was the very short list -

Alfred Hitchcock
Ridley Scott
Christopher Nolan

If anyone else has any suggestions, then please feel free.

Hitchcock - yes. Scott's done his fair share of shit, but manages to pull a classic out of his hat every ten years or so. And Nolan, like Paul Thomas Anderson or Alexander Payne, is too young to judge yet. Chances are he'll get shit at some point. Scorcese's still pretty good, mind.

Ridley Scott? He's made a lot of films, but only about two I actually really like, and they were both at the start of his film career. Obviously very interested in his next one though.

Paul Thomas Anderson has done well so far.

I really liked Blackhawk Down and American Gangster. They were both fairly recent. A lot of people like Kingdom of Heaven, but I couldn't get with it myself.

Paul Thomas Anderson's body of work is quite small. Though I think he is very talented.

M. Night Shyamalan.

People have a downer on post-Pulp Tarantino; but he's been consistently exciting to me, even if the thrills have got more goofy; even Death Proof had its moments, like Kurt Russell killing a girl by repeatedly crashing his car with the pair of them inside.

Agree, though Scorcese will always be remembered as the Mafia movie guy - even though films like Shutter Island and Hugo show he does have some versatility.

No one will agree with me but I have loved all Tarantino's films.

Tarantino's best work was Jackie Brown, though I know many fans will say otherwise.

Everything he's made since then has been God awful cack. Death Proof was about one of the worst films I've ever seen.

I was going to say Rodriguez, but then I remembered Spy Kids.

Sure, but it's what, five or so films over 15 or more years? Long enough to judge he has a steady quality control.

Unlike Paul WS Anderson, the man who makes Michael Bay look like Ken Loach.

Nah, for me Kill Bill and Inglorious Bastards are a ton of fun. I watch those and then hear people say stuff like you and wonder what they've been watching; they're just a heap of crazy fun.

Yep and the bad second half of Dusk Til Dawn.
