You'll get an "associative laugh" big error of a lot comedy writers is that everything must be a fully formed joke. Far from it, you can mix jokes with topics that are on people's minds. Hence the laughter comes from the association.
It's like a more sophisitcated version of going "know what I mean eh?"

At the end of the day the only judge of a material's worth is the audience, so do what you do and see how they respond.
Personally, I wouldn't open on a joke that is remotely controversial but then again, I'm a big wuss.
