Studies have also shown that the more people pirate, the more money they are likely to be spending on entertainment legitimately, particularly live music and associated merchandise. Take that into account, and almost every single argument that these creative industries make, particularly the record companies, fall apart.

I found that when I used to steal stuff such as music or video games online
I always without exception ended up paying less on entertainment legitimately because I already had the stuff I needed.

Although since I stopped stealing stuff the amount I pay legitimately has increased.

I know, I can't work out why either.

The latest anti-SOPA example making the rounds:

If you upload a Michael Jackson MP3 you can receive a jail sentence of 5 years. That's a year longer than the sentence received by the doctor who essentially killed him by over-prescribing dangerous drugs.

That is a bit extreme...

Very droll.

The point is that many pirates, particularly those who pirate the most, were found to be engaging in the illegal practices through love and enthusiasm for their chosen media, which was borne out in spending disproportionately higher amounts of their disposable income on legitimate sources of entertainment. That could be downloading a few tracks from a band's latest CD then going out and buying half of their back catalogue, checking out a movie and loving it so much you want a proper Blu-ray copy with all the extras, or checking out an old TV show, falling in love with it, and getting the DVD when it's eventually released. Not to mention, in regard to music particularly, live ticket sales and merchandise revenues.

The record companies conveniently forget all of that though, as that money tends to go pretty directly to the artists, not through their theiving marketing hands.

No I do get it, & am sure there would be a correlation.
And I'm not at all Pro Sopa, and agree with a lot of the points about sky high prices & a need to change with the times.
I was just thinking about a handheld game I've got, I don't download anything illegally anymore but since I realised you could, I haven't bought any software legally, and probably never will again.

unless they bring out another MarioKart

Yeah, I saw this on Facebook. What a twisted world we live in where we jail those who kill child molesters. Then we moan that we can't download that dead child molester's music for free.

Rolling eyes

I can't remember the name of the free music site I used to use. Was so long ago I don't even think it was illegal. Late '90s/early 2000s.

I bloody loved that site... :(

They should just lock up Justin Bieber.
