So long as an active congressman that supports the bill is around it can be introduced, it will be stopped this time, if may be stopped the next 99 times, but it only needs to be accepted once.
Corporations give the polititions the money they need to run in elections and now they want something back from the polititions, something like this was always bound to happen.
The big issue with SOPA isn't the protection of copyright but the EXTREME ways it will do this.
Suppose you ran a website or blog and someone posted a picture or a link to a video on YouTube and then someone else said "Hey that is my property and I don't give you permission". Under SOPA, your site can be shut down. You were not responsible and the majority of your content is above board but because of one link posted by a subscriber, your site gets removed.
Also under SOPA, a person doesn't even need to provide a certain amount of evidence to prove copyright has been breached. That means your site can be shut down without you even having done something wrong.
Five years in jail is also extreme considering that some people don't even get that for assault or rape. On the whole, it's a piss take that won't even put in dent in piracy.
Will the BCG be open tomorrow though?
Someone who makes a mash-up of songs for their own entertainment and puts it on YouTube, or someone who downloads a song or two to hear whether they want to buy an album are easily persecuted, and prosecuting them will make bugger all difference to huge pirate scams that help fund trafficking and drug trade. Surely there should be allocated resources for organised crime, rather than this move towards 'you'll see what we want you to see'. How long until dissent regarding US or other Western governments is banned?

Say you're American, and your teenage kid wants to download pirated movies. So he goes to his favourite piracy site only to find that your ISP is blocking its domain name because of SOPA.
Sucks.
But then his mate tells him how to change the DNS settings on his PC. Nobody is obliged to take DNS from their ISP, they can use an offshore provider, which is not subject to US law, instead. It's an absolute piece of piss to do this.
So unbeknownst to you, your kid changes your DNS settings to use a server in Russia or China or something.
Later, you come home from a hard day at the office and decide to do a bit on online banking. You go to wellsfargo.com or whatever, but because of your idiot kid your DNS is now being handled by a bunch of pirate-friendly Chinese guys. You could basically end up anywhere, handing your bank login info to a criminal enterprise.
That's what's going to happen if SOPA passes. Guaranteed.

The Internet is already being policed, but by private companies that own servers rather then democratically appointed organisations. Thankfully, they both have a good working relationship with each other, so things like child porn are removed pretty quickly and information given to the relevant authorities.
However, with legal processes like super injunctions being circumvented, it is only a matter of time before governments step in to protect their interests.
