The camera on my phone is a bit crap, so I was thinking of upgrading, but maybe it would make more sense to just buy another camera (I've already got an SLR but it's too big to slip into a pocket). A 12Mpixel camera can be had for just a few £tenners off eBay. Sensible or silly?

The new Sony Xperia S will have a 12Mpix camera on it when it is released around March, if you're thinking of upgrading your phone anyway: http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/sony-xperia-s-release-date-confirmed-1055122

As nice as it would be to buy a phone like that, I could never do it. I don't want to do a contract either. I'd rather have a dedicated camera, camcorder, whatever else there is.

I'm thinking of getting a Smartphone for £99. It does all the basics. Has Android 2.3, 5MP Camera. Not to slow. It may not work as fast as high end ones. But from all the negatives I've read, slight lag on scrolling through browser/whatever, I've seen Lady Leevil's HTC Desire do too. Now I know that's a phone getting on in years, but it's still a £350+ so at the end of the day, I'm prepared to put up with it. Especially seeing as my Android based MP3 player is really quite bad with dropping wifi signal, tiny screen, crashing. Anything I can next will be a plus!

Nogget, this is the camera we just got - http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_Camera/PowerShot/PowerShot_G12/. Managed to get it off eBay, practically brand new for £300. It's often used as the portable alternative for professional when they don't want to carry all their kit around. It is a really nice camera with lots, LOTS of customization.

What internet browser does everyone use on their Androids?

My stock app is fast but lacks any nice features.

I was using Opera Mobile on my old Android but it seems a little crap on my fancy new phone.

Not sure I like Dolphin.

Suggestions?

Is there a Bump App?

I just got a smart phone.

If the phone is so smart, can't you ask it?

It just dresses well.
What kind of smart were you thinking of?

The iStephen Fry.

Oh yeah, Android - enjoy it while it lasts.

Why do you think that?

Geek Joke!

Google is being sued by the world and his wife for pirating technology. Oracle for using java without a license, Microsoft, even BT.

Although Apple isn't suing Google they are suing all smartphone manufacturers who use Android. They're also close to winning a major patent infringement against HTC. This is only the beginning of such cases as more and more patents that Apple filed - many ten years or more ago - are granted and can be used to seek infringements against Android.

Apple lost the PC wars through Scully's incompetence in giving away Mac code to Microsoft - this won't happen again. And it won't take too many forced changes to the operation of Android - due to legal rulings on patent infringements - before the look and feel of the iphone is completely gone from the device.

I predict a resurgence of windows for users who don't want Apple. The Metro interface is the first great piece of Microsoft visual design ever (how the f**k did that happen?) and it won't be challenged by Apple. Microsoft will also readily license it to uncle tom cobbly.

Google is likely facing hard times ahead. Apple has bought three maps companies over the last few years - it's not hard to see that they are planning to drop Google maps from their devices. Siri-ing is certain to replace googling.

I don't get that joke at all but it looks clever. Well done.

What phone did you get?

Well if that's true it's a great shame because I'd take the open source capabilities of an Android device over a locked down licenced one like Apple or Win.

Surely Google will survive these lawsuits and what not. After all it needs to forefill its destiny of becoming Skynet.

I have a HTC Desire and whereas it's no iphone it does everything and has survivded me dropping it a few times.

Video cameras a bit poor and not much battery life.

nb why not get a contract phone?

most of the deals are better than getting a pgo chip and a good phone can make all the diference.
