Are poems funny?

Well not really like Pam Ayres, but do you think it can be successful?

I'll try.

'In the deep midwinter, snowy falls do flow, I tried to put me bin out long way to go.
In the deep midwinter, with the ice and snow, trudging with the weight I am so slow.

In the deep midwinter, need a helping hand, then a Official comes by me offers a hand, why so slow love get a gastric-band.

In the deep midwinter, I know where to go , just 'cos I's fat, I'll tell him shove it in your plough'.

Poems are great for comedians if they don't want to bother to learn the words as poets, for some reason, are allowed to read straight from a book and no-one bats an eyelid.

Poets, get off your arses and learn the fecking words!

I suspect that for many the book is more of a prop than anything. I think it's kind of expected too - for me it would look a bit peculiar having a poet summon up words from thin air. Still, that might be my bias as a comedian with a memory so bad he's forced to use a powerpoint presentation to remind him of his own jokes.

You are right, it is a prop more than anything but I am massively envious of comedy poets and the complete acceptance of the audience to allow them to read out of a book, I guess I just need to find a clever way of doing the same.

:)

Tim Key does funny poems, he's very good.

I, in turn, am endlessly envious by one-liner comedians who can rattle through hundreds of jokes without the need to carry a projector and screen to every gig.
