Quote: zooo @ January 13 2012, 1:04 PM GMTHow depressing.
Welcome to my world.
Although thank f**k not a woman they get it 100 times worse. They are expected to have boyfriends as well. Guys that's not really to much of an issue, Atleast I can just pretend I'm playing the field.
Quote: zooo @ January 13 2012, 1:02 PM GMTI knowsss! I agree!
Some women don't give it any thought though and just follow tradition blindly, which is a bit naughty. I think people should put some thought into why they're doing things before they do them.Depends. Many countries (Spain, possibly?) double barrel as a matter of course. And they have systems to make it not turn silly. Works for them.
How do these systems work?
I can't remember! I read about it around 5 years ago, all I can say is that it made sense to me at the time. Several countries do it, but have slightly different systems.
One of them was something like if two double barrelled people get married, they use the woman's mum's part, and the man's dad's part and put those together for their name.
But, each couple should do whatever works for them, the only problem is finding something that makes you both happy.
Taking someones name seems very old fashioned and weird.
So Mrs Arlington and Mr Sussex
have a beautiful baby Arsex?
You can see how that'll never work!

I want to take my husbands name, as my children will have his surname - and I don't want to be the only person in my little family with an odd surname. That seems strange to ostracise myself from my own family for the sake of not wanting to be old fashioned. I love that we will become Mr and Mrs ?.

Who wouldn't love Arsex?

You're marrying Doctor Who?
I too like the idea of a family all having the same surname.
They can of course all have the same double barrelled name. Or he could take your name if he wasn't bothered. Or you can take his. All good choices.

You could argue, of course, why should the children take his surname? Why not have them take yours. Husband too! It's the nineties for God's sake.

Good point - but my name is long and doesn't fit into spaces on forms - plus I want a new signature.
Hehe. What if his name was Pratt or something, would you be a bit put off?
Ummm... yeah, not going to lie.
