I've been married 38 years ( waits for everybody to fall down in shock), and haven't regretted it so far. You find a soul-mate ( whom you sometimes want to kill) and though the ceremony thing may be a bit prehistoric, it's a kind of spiritual pledge to each other - a formalising. I was married in a church because I was a believer in those days. If it were now, I'd fancy a pagan ceremony but I'd still want a ceremony. As for all this crap about huge cost! I'd have eloped if we'd had to have a big do. There were us, best man and wife, bridesmaid and bloke (who 'gave me away') and our 2 widowed mothers. I defy anybody to say it was any less of a celebration than a huge do full of relatives you have to invite but hate.

Um, my question was - why do people still get married?
Though based on the slightly negative bent I used to phrase the question, as if I was being stalked by a dark horse, I can see why you might come to this conclusion.
Thanks again for the additional replies. This being nice and respectful to other BCG Members is starting to get on my tits, so I will revert back to type by writing nasty things on other posts.
Go on - write a nasty thing (prepares to snigger)
