So what would a typical 3 bed semi or terrace cost in 'that London'? I know the prices will vary wildly but as an average...

Round mine (suburbs of South-West London, in one of the least expensive boroughs in that area), average 3 bedroom semi is about £1350 a month.

EDIT: Bloody hell! Just picked Stoke Newington at random on www.rightmove.co.uk as my cousin used to live there and you're looking at £2k a month! That's pushing the equivalent of the annual average salary isn't it?

Stokey is less expensive because it's not near a tube!

EDIT: Meaning, not that that price is misquoted, but that's quite good for London. Just tried to find other examples but was too depressing and so am going to hide under a blanket.

I know it sounds crazy but put it in the freezer and then a bowl of uncooked rice. The freezer stops the water doing more damage and the rice helps to draw out the moisture as it melts. I've done this a couple of times and it has always worked for me.

The freezer is a bad idea because the expanding ice can damage internal components. I immediately vacuumed out all the water and then put it in a box with commercial desiccant (better than rice) but still no result after 2 days.

This one's out of my price range . . . . .

Being a primary school teacher this is well within budget.

I could probably afford that a year.

At first I thought my brain was playing tricks on me (1am here). I'm trying to decide how much money I would have to have to justify spending that much on rent. Decided I can't imagine having that much money.

...and if you can afford to buy...

Roman Abramovich had a choice between buying this place or Fernando Torres - Hmmm, which is the better value for money...?

He's not being sarky. This is the highlight of his day. Later he's sorting his toenail collection.

Actually I'm off out for an hour, so I'd rather you got all this out of your system before I get back! :P

The rule of thumb is that the total cost of housing should be at or below 30% of your gross income to be considered affordable.

Just exercised my pound and meter conversion skills to determine that my mortgage, insurance and taxes on my 4-bedroom, 250 m² home comes to £1050/month. Lots of math involved -- do they even mention square meters over there? Most of the listings I've seen mention the sizes of individual rooms and not the entire dwelling.
