The rule of thumb is that the total cost of housing should be at or below 30% of your gross income to be considered affordable.
Just exercised my pound and meter conversion skills to determine that my mortgage, insurance and taxes on my 4-bedroom, 250 m² home comes to £1050/month. Lots of math involved -- do they even mention square meters over there? Most of the listings I've seen mention the sizes of individual rooms and not the entire dwelling.
