Anonymous or not? Page 5

How much or what members reveal about themselves perhaps depends on what they hope to gain from being a forum member. I have found that some people change their attitude and opinions as and when they find out things about someone else - in real and virtual life.

Friends may respond to each other more often or differently or they might communicate privately, but those who don't know each other could give a more objective/challenging/helpful response to a post so does it really make much difference how much we know about each other

I agree with you. On the first point sometimes perhaps your own exerpiences can also change your attitude or opinion towards something or someone. My opinions on some things now, be it on here on amongst people I know in the flesh might different than they were say 5 years ago. Events happen in life that sometimes make you relate or understand a situation better.

I also agree with you on the second point. I have sometimes been given advice/opinions by people I don't well that has helped me, othertimes it is the case that only someone I know well has the answer.

I have PM'd everybody who needs to know my opinion on this matter. ;)

The site runs successfully as it is, and I have been a member for 14 months and have posted 2050 times, much to your disdain! ;)

Why do you think that your presence on this site is not welcome?

Hmm, interesting quasi-philosophical-practical topic Dellas! :)

I suppose anonymity in this context can be divided into strands of
1. Immediate information, such as avatars and screen names
2. How much personal information people share and the sense one gets of their character, and whether that is true to life or an intentional persona
3. Does identity change when people meet up offline

Personally, I don't use my real name because I'm aware this is a public forum and as I'm fortunate enough to sometimes get writing work, I don't want employers making judgements about my professional self based on what I see as a friendly space to whinge or inanely waffle.
In addition, there are some proper nutters in real life and online who I don't want knowing things about me; plenty of people here know my name and what I look like, but I don't want anyone in the world to be able to access that.

Is this because I asked your name? No offence intended. Just curious.

MarcP you just send me a photo of your cock....again.

Drinking and PMing don't mix.

Especially as I know you used the mayors computer to send it.

This. Also, even if I didn't care about a nutter*, I wouldn't want a nutter knowing anything about my family.

* Although the term nutter is somewhat un-pc, and we should really call them 'mental f**kwits'.

Things are getting a bit tense around here. I trust this will calm everyone down...

Surely it's up to us how much info we share. If you have any concerns or questions you can pm the person concerned or the admins.
As the victim of an internet and subsequent real life stalker I try to be careful with my info and who I knowingly share it with.
As for friends or cliques - some people naturally get along better than others, just as they do in the real world.
I knew several of the people on here before I joined and have become friends with many I have met in person since. I am hopefully meeting up with a few more for the first time this year.

I agree with all of this.

I can't be bothere to read through 5 pages of this but...

A) who said anything about being anonymous?
B) Why worry????
