Sherlock Page 38

Well, the love interest was hardly superfluous in that it's how Sherlock worked out how to unlock the magic phone. And the fact that he'd fallen for her was supposed to give her betrayal of him that added kick at the end.

One of my minor niggles is the plane-full-of-dead people was completely balmy and wouldn't even get much credence in a Catskillz YouTube video. Although a great image.

And of course th phone was a McGuffin that started to creak quite badly towards the end. Why couldn't they destroy it? Because it might have information on that would save lives. Er, okay.

Oh, and whenever you see an unrecognisable corpse in crime fiction it's never the person everyone says it is. So sexy tart returning wasn't much of a shock.

But these are minor quibbles as it was genuinely pretty good. And hats off to the actress for filming that scene with no clothes on (or, at the very least, strategically placed tape). That must have been quite awkward.

Yes, I was bareheaded at that point.

Irene was lucky to have been kidnapped by incompetent terrorists else she'd have never escaped.

This was my only niggle, I thought it'd have been better if the camera panned back slightly to reveal that it was all faked by Sherlock and The Woman, rather than Sherlock traveling to Pakistan without Watson realising and saving her from a horde of terrorists!

Also, they missed a comic line when Sherlock told Adler not to bother complimenting him on his deductive skill as Watson had already used every combination of flattering words, she then said something along the lines of "I'd like to have you right now and make you beg, twice", surely Sherlock should've spluttered out "Well, actually, to be fair, he's never said that".

:D

Enjoyable opening episode. Started well, lost focus and drifted a bit in the second act, but got back on track at the end. Still think they'd be better at 60 minutes, though.

Pretty much agree with this. I think that my problem with the last series was that I found it a lot less satisfactory when I looked back on it than I had when actually watching it. This just made me feel a bit...cheated I suppose.

I read it as the rescue being in her mind and that it didn't actually take place?

Wow that's a dark version Marc.

I suspect this was just the old Who issue of writing themselves into a corner. And the phone the government with all it's technological resources couldn't hack rang a very false note.

I think they DID do that joke! They just didn't think it necessary to spell it out, just stayed silent for a moment. That's how I saw it anyway.

I thought the very end was absolutely perfect, a twist upon a twist. Don't see it as being 'written into a corner'. They are very talented writers who actually know what they're doing now and then, y'know.

Yes, seemed a bit more dramatic to me and in keeping with the story that way. Of course if they want to bring her back then it could be real ??

Indeed. I was rather glad they didn't go with the obvious hitting you over the head with it line.

I didn't really get why she went somewhere with loads of Muslims as they're not exactly big S&M fans. Far better to stay in the decadent west and ply her trade her.

I think they rather did with the 'measurements' line though.

Yes. I didn't figure that one out straight away like Stott the brainiac, but I did after she said she was flattered. We probably didn't need her explaining it as well just before she jumped out the window.

My only other minor niggle is that they need to watch it with all the gimmicky camera tricks, they could get very irritating very quickly.

Surely if it happened in anybody's mind it was Sherlock's? Hence him suddenly looking cheerful at the end? Although your Brazilesque ending also works.

Chip loves a Brazilian end.
