just installed celtx and that seems to work fine and much more user friendly

I doubt it.

Scriptsmart like all scripting template add-ons to MS word, simply uses the paragraph formatting styles capability of MS Word, plus some keystrokes definitions to activate a particular paragraph style.

I suspect you were not using it correctly & were not switching styles, so everything was in Slug-Line format (i.e. a scene header line format).
