Give comedies an opportunity to grow (no pun intended). Series One of Blackadder I suspect would have been binned and the Beeb would never have taken on 'Men Behaving Badly' from ITV as both were pretty poor first time around.

Agreed. Harry Hill's TV Burp started out with low rating sand now it's ITV's biggest comdey show. Shows need time to mature and you can't be certain a show will be a winner after only ONE series.

Also I think we should do what HBO do and have a high risk = high quality element to their programmes. If you gave more edgier or experimental stuff a try then we could really be on to something. And if you broadcast them, put them on decent time slots and not dead-end graveyard slots in the middle of the nigh!

Thirdly, let comedians do the shows they want. Many a time TV shows been given comedians instead of comedians been given TV shows. These often flop and fail. Give comedians shows like Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle, a programme in which you can do what you want, with artistic freedom and without a million lawyers and censors breathing over your shoulder.

HBO certainly have certainly made some great sitcoms. Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry Sanders, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Curb Your Enthusiasm. What are the others again?

Lucky Louie, Real Time with Bill Maher, HBO specials, Mr.Show, Flight of the Concords?

And anyway, quantity does not always mean quality. They may have a small selection of shows but those are perhaps really good.

Overall I'm talking about their general attitude to comedy in general.

HBO's also produced the Larry Sanders Show, Tenacious D, Entourage, Bored to Death, Dream On and the more or less forgotten 1st and 10. Not sure how the Co-productions with the BBC work, but Extras and Life's Too Short are both BBC/HBO co-productions.

If you say the title of this thread as a Brit it sounds negative.

Do it as an American, suddenly it becomes a positive statement.

You may have to add an.. or what, but I think it works anyway

I've been working my way through Party Down over the past couple of days, another fine show to add to the list and apparently there'll be a film following either late next year or early 2013.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Archer, The League, Community, Parks & Recreation, Louie, Curb Your Enthusiasm...

Yeah I think it's safe to say that US comedy is doing okay.

"Arrested Development" is making a comeback! The best US comedy ever, in my book!
Caught the US "Shameless" - it really was good.
Some older favourites of mine from the US are "The Golden Girls", "Roseanne", "Cybill", "Frasier" and "High Society".

On the comedy-drama front, I like "Ugly Betty" and "The Gilmore Girls".
