Yes, think about characters and the trapped situation - but more importantly, think like a producer.
Don't try to copy what is already on TV.
We had had Inbetweeners and Fresh Meat so young men and students living together/trying to get laid is unlikely to sell.
Don't think' Well this has never been done before so its great' - there is usually a reason why it hasn't been done.
Remember that sitcom has to appeal to a wide audience.
Can you describe your pitch in a sentence? A paragraph? If you can't you should.
Sitcom is about finding out what your lead character wants and NOT giving it to them.
Lastly. Don't write Comedy drama instead. Please don's have a huge cast or over arcing narrative.
Keep it small- as small as you can. And simple. Don't - as Michael Jacob so rightly said - reinvent the wheel. Just stick some alloys on it.
