You say the guy's obnoxious and ignorant - so is he being purposely racist or just thick? Either way it doesn't seem a problem to me as long as we're meant to be laughing at the guy, not with him.
Having said that, you'll always have f**kwits in the audience who don't 'get it' and will just identify with the character's misgivings regardless. I'm thinking Alf Garnett, Pub Landlord etc.
