There was much talk as to whether he laughed like that in real life....would I be right in thinking it was?

I can't quote chapter and verse but I'm sure I've seen/heard him interviewed when he did indeed laugh like that.

Then there was Sybil's laugh - Which Basil described as sounding like someone machine gunning a seal.

Which if I remember rightly from Cleese's commentary of Fawlty Towers pointed out that Connie had a very similar laugh.
