I liked Last Of The Summer Wine but I think it should have ended in the 1980s or 90s.

My choice too.

Brittas, big mistake to, literally, revive him after the original writers left.
Shelley, no-one other than Peter Tilbury understood how to write the part
Becker, big dip after the original female lead left.
Cheers, ditto.
M*A*S*H, should have finished when Henry died.
Allo Allo, not the same after Sam Kelly left.
One Foot In The Grave, final series left a nasty taste.
OFAH, perfect ending then those bloody awful Christmas specials

Christ it would be quicker to come up with a list of sitcoms that have not flogged the dead horse.

Is that all Christmas specials, or a select few??

The only 2 that I felt were in your words "awful" were 'To Hull & Back' and 'Strangers On The Shore'.

I meant the ones after the series ended. To Hull and Back was good.

Nooo ! Rebecca was class !

Well, 'streetwise' class ;)

Quite.
It's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy really as the last series of any sit-com (apart from those very few you speak of) were the ones that failed to get re-commissioned - due, in the main, to them not being up to snuff.

On a separate note, is it too soon to nominate 'Life's Too Short' ?

I think you may be right, I quite enjoyed episode 1 and wondered why by episode 2, judging by the trailers it isn't picking back up.

As a series that went on too long, Bread springs to mind, if they'd have stuck at a dozen or so episodes it could be considered a classic, I seem to remember the actors playing the roles changed more often than the plots.

I think the Americans have cornered the market in overrunning sitcoms, Friends, How I Met Your Mother (just meet her and get on with it!) and many more that made it past episode 1.

Roseanne was ruined in the end.
Think most sitcoms involving family are ok when the children are younger but messes up when continues into teenage years. My Family shows that.
Also making characters go from cute dumb to grown up sad like Only Fools & Horses. Rodney wasn't so funny once he got married.

There's probably more that will come to mind later.

Red Dwarf. Can you think of any more?

Life's Too Short

Life's Too Short

I'll take that as a compliment.

Life's Too Short

That's harsh.

"Him and Her" and "Phoneshop" somehow managed to last beyond one episode.

Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps (two series too many)
My Family (one series too many)
Roseanne (one series too many)
The Office (HATE IT)
The Royle Family (HATE HATE HATE Jims spotty nose)
Never The Twain (Yawn)
3rd Rock From The Sun (one series too many)
Frasier
2point4 Children (one series too many) - who ever thought I'd say that!!!!
Only Fools and Horses (Last episode was 1 too far)
As Time Goes Dry (I mean By) (love it, but they dragged it out)
The Inbetweeners (If we can't have a 4th series then the first 3 meant nothing)
Big Top
The Brittas Empire (series too many)

Defies the description.
