University Level Education: Your Thoughts Page 2

I've been recruiting and shortlisting recently.

And I gotta say those who did a proper degree (maths, history, music, psychology etc) at either a proper uni or getting a decent grade 2:1 oe better. They're worth it, learnt to learn manage their time etc.

How ever the rest really are no better than some one who didn't go at all. And a lot less value than those who worked really in any job for the last 3 years.

Sootyj concludes thus. Yes there is good education out there and it's as good if not better then it's ever been. But there's a lot of people being shoved through second rate degrees at third rate university departments. And hitting the job market with no useful skills, no jobs and thousands in debt.

This is idiotic and it utterly devalues education. Get school level education right. Don't sausage machine turn out people capable of being graduates. But teach a love of learning and a good functional level of literacy.

And if our building, electrical, plumbing jobs etc are going to Rumanians and Poles. It's because they teach these skills at vocational universities and give them the same status as degrees.

It annoys me so much when eejits in the media say 'don't got to uni - get a trade instead'.

Well...I know at least 4 dudes who have had a trade since leaving school (3 sparkies, 1 mechanic) and they're all out of work and can't get anything. That's 10 years' experience and still no job.

So, where are the jobs for those vocationally-trained people?

There's no jobs for any one, the level of abbility of people going for entry level care jobs is frightening to say the least.

I dunno get used to working in a career you didn't train for. That said most of the people I know who trained as electricians work in that field.

Except one guy and he's an idiot.

Alot of countries like Holland top up low wages to a minimun standard. Maybe the idea of a 100% fulfilling employment is unrealistic?

No jobs for anyone sucks, but at least they won't have to pay someone else out of their dole money to fix the leccie/loo :)

I went to Uni..... and hated it.

I stuck it out but I found my degree pointless in my work. The people peed me off and I felt it killed my creativity rather than helped it.

If you are planing to be a Doctor or Lawyer, go nuts but if it's the arts you are into, there are more affordable and better ways to gain the skills you need.

Sorry but I've worked long enough to know this is true in this field.

I think that's true for some arts subjects, but not all.
Plus it depends on the university, the course, and the tutors.

Yeah but you is a swot. Smarmy

I is educated too you knows... Whistling nnocently

It's also the way GCSEs and A Levels are so targetted to getting you into Uni. It's like they've managed to lose creative original thinking AND actual factual knowledge.

What did you do your second degree in?

I've always liked the idea of Steiner education. It's not for everyone but I think I would have liked it.

So what brings ou back Ruby?

Boredom. Utter mind numbing boredom.

Creative Writing. :)
I'm not saying mine was or wasn't a waste of money, I haven't decided yet. But I'm certain that not all are.

I'd like to do a degree in uncreative writing.

Then I could make a fortune writing for Eastenders.

I am currently studying screen writing at Birckbeck. Roughly equivlanet to taking swimming lessons on the Deck of the Titanic.
