1) Your average police department doesn't keep a stock of tranquilizer darts on hand.
2) They found some, tried them and wound up with enraged tigers, lions and grizzly bears charging through a populated area.
Jack Hanna, our most famous zookeeper (hundreds of TV appearances) traveled there and agreed with the decision to shoot them. As he said, the protection of human life comes first.
