BBC Three opportunity for a sitcom writer.... Page 2

Quote: Kev F @ October 12 2011, 8:55 PM BST

What? What a totally arse-about-face way to go about producing a comedy. Instead of beginning with good writers and a good idea, you have four random ideas scribbled on the back of a fag packet and put those out there for unknown writers to wring the life out of.

I am pleased to find myself agreeing with Kev F.

Andrew Newman?

The ex-head of C4 comedy???

This has got 'serious chance to break into the industry' written all over it.

If they aren't asking for anything but a script then it's fine with me. An opportunity is an opportunity...

This looks like a scam to me, and I agree with Kev F that it looks like a reality show. The advert is full of spelling mistakes and asks you to apply to Andrew Newman, presumably not the same Andrew Newman who used to be Comedy Commissioner for Channel 4 and left to join Objective Productions.

Kev's take is that the sit isn't important. My take is that it always is - contextually & the writing.

This looks like a scam to mes.

Can you phone your contacts and find out Declan, and let us know, otherwise it looks like it might be something worth looking at.

Of course the sit counts. But do you find the best sitcoms for BBC3 by defining the sit in advance? I doubt it.

If anybody is worried, all you need to do is go to BBC Commissioning and look at the Beeb's list of suppliers.
If they've been given a blank commission, they'll be on that list.

Well they did ask for original ideas too. It's a bit like northern drama initiatives from the BBC - they are skewing these things regionally. rightly or wrongly, for a reason - so best take that on board.

A website asking for sitcom scripts and promising us fame and fortune...

Where have I heard that one before...?

But it's free to enter, Jack, so I'm sure you'll be at the front of the queue.

I wouldn't want to put people off - far from it, there are few enough opportunities as it is, and thanks to Marooned for flagging it up. My frustration is as a viewer more than anything. I'd rather channels were investing in the best comedy, rather than the best comedy to fit a pre-determined idea.

I would but I lack the "secret tips" to write a sitcom. Tell me oh wise one... How does one go about writing a sitcom? There's "rules" to writing comedy right?

If you can share some of the "secrets" that "top producers are really looking for" at a price less than £75 per day I'll let you attend my "Why Pots Shouldn't Call Kettles Black" workshop.

The first rule is learn how to work with people and not against them.

I'm sure you're really good at that.

Leave the drink alone, Jack, you'll make a great adult one day.

Okey dokey Dec, tell me, which rule is "How to rip people off and overcharge for basic, basic information" is that rule 2, or 3?

Anyway, let's leave it there, I already told you how much I abhor your heavy-handed, shilling, insincere salesman schtick. Everyone knows the score, just that some people have spare cash and nothing to lose and so take on chance on various hucksters and their false promises. No harm done.
