THE SITCOM TRIALS - October 21st 2011 Manchester Page 13

Jack, I attended one of Declan's/Simon's workshops. They are worth every penny and cheaper than other such classes. I learned so much on that day, rewrote/resubmitted my script and it didn't get shortlisted.
That's not to say I'm a naff writer, I have been so close to acceptance even by ITV

BB, No offence but I don't feel at odds with the people who attend these courses. £75 a day to be told the basics you can find in any library book on the subject. When I was a kid starting out I myself could have had my head turned with various "learn how to shoot a film in 11 days" "The Writers Circle" type of charlatan shit.

This is something I care deeply about. People getting ripped off, bullshitted, and then them acting like some brainwashed cultees defending the ones who showed them a little attention and pandered to their esteem in exchange for some folding money.

Some people want to pay their money to have some prick sit them all in a circle and recite the 'rules' of comedy at them, then, have at it.

If not being shortlisted or even close to accepted was worth that money, so be it. Maybe you could have had that result all on your own.

Writing comedy isn't like teaching someone how to drive. It's mostly either in you or not.

My ONLY problem is with the wankers who organise these things looking to gain a quick payday on the back of empty promises, preying on the delusional and using the lure of people achieving their dreams.

Why not say "This course allows you to meet other writers" INSTEAD, it's all bullshit hyped up soundbites "Learn what producers are REALLY looking for" and other such nonsense.

These two, Declan and Simon provided a testimonial for the guy who wrote How Not... book. It's all a sham circle.

If someone sells a script it's because of their OWN talent, not because some tool in an hired function room got everybody to conform to a set of hack/forulaic rules etc etc.

There is no rules, beyond formatting and common sense - No Rules! There is NOTHING on ANY course that you can't find out for free. Nothing. Nothing at all. These people are selling public domain information and to all the "artists" who line up one by one kissing up to this fad practise - Good luck with relying on people like this for your artistic fulfillment.

When the credit card details have been processed these pricks won't be around when you're back to square one and you realised you've been "taught" what you already knew.

They've found an easy way to make a living, much like the Spanish timeshare people, that's fine. Most victims of cons deserve shortchanging, but - Preying on innocent delusions of people who just want to write, and to be tricked into thinking there's a "secret" way they haven't yet learned, is f'cking scum.

'There is no rules...'

Not even grammatical ones?

Whoops, thanks for the correction... How much do I owe you now?

£75?

£150?

Was that an "English Grammar" Masterclass, exclusively endorsed by Sky, HBO, BBC, ITV, The Oscars and God?

Let me go and get my credit card, or do you take cash at your venues?

the courses I did helped

most people will fail at writing sitcoms

not doing a course merely makes failing easier

I think at 70 years old, I am not easily taken in Jack but you are entitled to your opinion and I don't agree with a poster being called a troll because of a difference in opinion but you are rather rude. You sound one angry/bitter writer. And you know, the shortlist is decided by the organisers and why not? It does have a fair percentage of personal taste in there, but they will also have a better idea as to what the industry is looking for. I still think my sitcoms are hilarious ;)

Dwight Eisenhower is reported to have said of Senator Joseph McCarthy that he wouldn't "get into a pissing contest with that skunk."

Don't know what made me think of that...

Oh well, fair play to those writer gurus, I guess it works.

If ya can't beat 'em join 'em.

On an unrelated matter, any of you people looking to get in shape?

It's a new thing I'm working on...

;) Interested, must loose weight quick how much do your courses cost?

I believe Dellas has been holding Terry Weight prisoner in her cellar and has finally decided to release him

Laughing out loud Laughing out loud Laughing out loud true

;) Sarcy' pair you two! You certainly do not need any comedy training!

Jack does make a point generally to be fair. And if you promote/sell on a public forum then it's kinda fair game to be challenged and answer as best you can. Specifically it is up to these courses/competitions to defend themselves. As to being on a course run by people who then have a competition with a prize of a commission (which means development) I think it's kinda okay, if they are not then demanding a percentage of everybody who gets showcased if they then go on to get a deal, based on the showcase or not, for 18 months... ? Seems odd to me. Everybody else gets showcased not just the writers, remember both spin and spin off shows point out it's not about just the writers, it's a showcase for the actors, directors and producers, but it is only the writers who get hit in the pocket if something happens. As to the last Mission not being involved in the judging process for the winner - that is slightly not true as they were involved in choosing who got through to that final judgement.

Not that the "Let's all have a heated debate" hasn't been interesting but back in "other news" on the voting and comments about sketch vs sitcom; can I just clear up that Mad Axe-Man and Her is sit-com, the
chunk I've posted is just the first part of Ep 1 "The Axeman Cometh".

The situation that transpires and will be the premis for the on-going episodes is that The "Axe-Man" Marek becomes Angela's
lodger.

Loving reading all the comments on the different scripts, whoever said comedy was Marmite had it about bob on.
