Newsjack - Series 5 Page 33

I actually thought Episode 2 was a lot smuttier (jazz mags, etc.) after convincing myself they don't go for that sort of stuff.

I haven't listened yet but somebody whose opinion I trust said it was 'utter rubbish'

Was that harsh?

I don't think it was utter rubbish, but throughout all the series, it's seemed to me that there's been better material here in the reject threads than in much of what has been broadcast.

Some editions will be better than others.

Of course.

It would be interesting to hear a show in the same format that wasn't news based but was just general comedy sketches.

I suppose the problem with that would be the lack of a clear theme.

Check out the Recorded for Training Purposes threads.

I thought episode two was funnier than the first by a way. Though, obviously I may have been in a better mood listening to it.

Check out the Recorded for Training Purposes threads.

But....but....RFTP had a theme!!!

(I forget what it was now...technology, or something)

Maybe they could introduce ThemeJack, where every Friday morning we'd go to the BBC website to see the word of the week (example: Food) and then we'd have all weekend to write sketches about food for the Monday 12pm deadline.

Hmmm....that sounds awful, but at least it would make a change from 'News' every week.

I agree that it was ruder and my jaw dropped when they described a dino as a pussie because like you I thought newsjack would shy away from that stuff. This week I included a one liner that I would have thought was too rude for newsjack but after ep 2 I thought I'd send it in

I've only been listening/contributing (well, trying to) since series 4, and I found the first 4 episodes of series 4 to be pretty damn good, but there was a noticeable dropoff at the end of the series. I then thought episode 1 of the new series was weaker still, although last week's was a major improvement (the sketches were mostly good, but I'm at a loss as to how most of the one-liners were chosen out of all the possible submissions?? Agree that there is often funnier stuff found in the rejects thread)

Noticeably the last 4 episodes have all been script-edited by Gareth Gwynn, so it will be interesting to see if there's a change in quality with Jon Hunter script-editing the next two shows. I'm not knocking GG by the way(it was one of his episodes that my one contribution was used in after all!)

And of course (just in case you weren't aware...) comedy is subjective, apparently!

The script editor doesn't have anything to do with the sketch selection process (I didn't think). I thought the role just smartened up the sketches that had made it?

If you don't think they're as good (and it is entirely subjective), I suspect it's just a coincidence.

From GG himself

>>>Good sketches get put into a folder, which the script editor and both producers read on Monday night, deciding what is good to go, what might be fixable and what won't make it.>>>

So, very much involved...

Hi Stephen. Mine was the first Planet Dinosaur sketch. I actually considered not sending it cos it was loud and a bit silly, but I'm glad I did now.

Three sketches and a handful of one-liners off for me.

Planet Dinosaur was an absolute stormer. I wished I'd written it.

Okay, I stand corrected. It's entirely his fault. :)

Is it the time when we all assume we have been rejected?

No. Wait till they've actually recorded the show first.

You don't tend to know the result until the evening of the day the episode goes out.
