Has 2008 Turned Everyone into Arseholes?

I'm only asking because the wildfire action on these threads of late has reminded me of some bad old days when I gave up on it all for a bit.

For whatever reason, people seem very prone lately to:
- argue the toss over nothing;
- put their stuff up for critique, and complain when it's critiqued;
- critique the style of critique;
- show off in critiquing;
- pick fights;
- name call;
- state opinion as fact (ok, that will never go away);
- dismiss the rudeness and offensiveness of others, but ignore their own rude and offensive behaviour (moderators are guilty of this too - possibly more than most - in my opinion).

There does seem to be something in the air. Although I don't go to critique much, so I think I miss a bit of it.

Hi Badge,

Things have indeed been a bit up in the air recently.

We do love a good debate on here, but sometimes things have got quite personal...which is not tolerated on here.

Hopefully, people will calm down soon enough and we can return to the pleasant forum we all like to come to discuss things on.

For the record I was an asshole way before 2008.

Yes, just to make this crystal for everyone...

Whilst it is true that some of the older and more 'familiar' members have little jovial digs at each other, the kind of personal insults seen in the past few days, as well as general troublemaking and pathetic bitchery of some members, are totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated any further.

I had hoped that the situation would calm of its own accord, but alas this did not happen, and so official warning have been issued to a number of people.

I think everyone is pretty aware that I am reluctant to intervene and ban members if I can avoid it. But to be blunt, I'm just f**king bored of it all now, and a number of people are very close to being banned.

I'm not about to turn into some kind of Hitler, and most of you have nothing to worry about as this is really limited to a small handful of people within the writers' forums, but do just be aware that any further naughtiness will be met with immediate account suspensions, or bannings should I deem it appropriate.
