About plans to televise court proceedings in England and Wales.
Quite apprehensive about this, would be interested if anyone agrees with Kenneth Clarke that people will be better informed citizens rather than just turning our legal system and its representatives into a form of celebrity BB or Judge Judy?
Yes I do.
Most tabloid court reporting is a caricature of a trial's
events to convey a well worn cliché about mad judges and magistrates, out of touch with the world, giving daft sentences. Depending on the sentence judges are either looney wishy washy liberals or crazy hangers and floggers.
The Scottish experiment a few years back was very enlightening but talk of expanding it was around the time of the OJ Simpson trial.
Many in the judiciary, who opposed televising trials, muddied the issue with the media circus that surrounds high profile US trials.
We have limits in England about what you can report about defendants before and during a trial but that has nothing to do with televising a trial in a balanced manner.
