I was just watching clips from some classic movies on YouTube. Is it me or do they look better not-digitally remastered? The horror movie clips look slightly scarier, with their crackling VHS/film sound. Don't get me wrong, I like a good quality picture. But I suppose it's kinda liking the sound of crackling vinyl. Some people like it, others don't.
Watched Atonement the other night, I'd been wanting to see this for ages...didn't grab me though, there was something missing I found, and really didn't like Keira Knightley's clipped accent, but did like James McAvoy as usual, he can do no wrong really.

I agree. CGI ruins things.
I just watched Ghostbusters and the Harryhausenesque, sometimes slightly shit effects are scarier than they would be if it was totally remastered.

Whilst I agree totally, tis not what I meant. It was more to do with the VHS quality of the film, rather than the razor sharp digital picture of a DVD/Blu'.
I suppose it's the nostalgia of buying/finding/renting and lending old VHS films years ago. The trailers at the start of tapes were good too. I wouldn't stand for a trailer to be at the start of a DVD though. It just doesn't seem right.
But yes, back to your point. CGI monsters suck. I wouldn't necessarily be totally against CGI though. I understand it's doing many things we don't even notice and if it makes the film better then fair do's.
But my favourite example of why old F/X are better than CGI is The Thing. And I fear what the remake (of a remake 
) will look like.

It's not a remake, it's a prequel showing what happened to the other camp (that end up chasing the dog with the copter at the beginning of The Thing). But yes, hopefully it won't suck balls.

I do like a slightly blurry '80s film. I saw a bit of Beverly Hills Cop 3 for the first time yesterday (looking all sharp and made in the '90s) and it looked all wrong. Those films are supposed to be blurry!
Oh, right. Well if they're smart they'll keep the CGI effects to a minimum and reply upon the isolated atmosphere that worked so well in the sequel um, first one, um remake!

The Thing was a remake, but it had next to nothing in common with the original.

I still think the first one captured the feeling of isolation very well. Although I've only seen it once and that was years ago.

Have you read the book?
No, have you? but I think I'd probably prefer it somehow as I really like the story, just it didn't all gel for me in the film.
I've read it. Haven't seen the film. Found the ending a bit of a let-down, even felt a bit cheated.
