Sending your script to Marc Blake Page 4

http://www.lucyvee.blogspot.com/ - this came recommended on another group I'm with, but I don't personally believe in using services like these.

Funny thing is Dan, even if I'm paying somebody to read it and comment on it, I'd still feel like I was wasting his time!! Laughing out loud

You're like the writing vigilante, Frankie! Saving the writers from having their time wasted by producers! There's a superhero in there somewhere...

RE: SCRIPTS

Dear all. There has been a high volume of scripts coming to me this year, many of which contain the same issues. To help you to help me, here is a list of a few pointers that may clarify any issues you have with sitcom, me or my service and with the state of the world generally (poor, fading fast, southerly)

1. No, I am not one of the lucky few to have had his sitcom broadcast but I sold four and have written eleven. I moved away to comic novels - Sunstroke, Bigtime, 24 Karat Schmooze, and TV Drama "The Swap" ITV 2002. Also many dumb comedy books, eg The Little Book of Drinking.
I have since then been full time teaching, lecturing and working with sitcom and prod co's and writers - including work in South Africa and Belgium (as mercenary). Oh, Ok, Consultant.

2. I have direct contacts to some prod co's but will ONLY send them stuff that I believe has huge potential and will not waste thier time. Please make your script look good on the page. I know its not a beauty contest but an easy-to-read script is always received with a warm heart. We all WANT to find the good stuff and start with HOPE every time.

3. Sometimes, the problem is not the sitcom, but the choice of arena, topic or general idea: It just won't find a place on Mainstream TV. Please be very aware of what is suitable for BBC 1,2,3,4 and remember that C5 have cancelled their slate and C4 invest in very few terrestrial shows.

4. Please watch and write SITCOM. Many of you are sending comedy dramas - or to be more specific, something that is half way between the two. They are very different beasts. Shameless, Teachers, Life after Forty or Dr Martin are com/dram. Black Books, Peep Show and the Office are sitcom.

5. If you want to send me com/drama I will charge more. It's an hour for a start, plus it needs a lot more planning and development. Please specify when you write to me.

6. I am raising the fees in response to the recession/market forces etc. I still feel that £75 will be well spent and save you a lot of anonymous rejections and wasted time - please see testimonial page. It takes me at least four hours to read, crit form a report and send out said report so really I am working for about £16 an hour. Hey...I ought to raise it more.

7. One script is usually enough. I am happy to read two or more but you won't be getting huge additional benefits unless you require close scrutiny.

8. There is no eight.

9. The HOW TO books are basic guides. I do a lot more in my classes - starting again in january, but the publishers made me edit them and dumb them down. Sorry.

10. Yellow is my favourite colour.
I am working on another novel, which I too must send out this year.
My website has no link because I have been very lazy in running it this year- in fact I have not visited it in many months.
Let's get this damned Christmas out of the way and back to work!!!

Normal superhero powers are diminished by the kryptonite of 'dumbed-down mainstream TV' and calls for a hero to save us brings forth SuperChav, Producer ordinare :)

Hi Marc I have a copy of The Little Book of Drinking which I found (believe it or not) in a pub!

You make a lot of interesting points. I think what I am writing is black comedy or comedy/drama rather than sitcom.

The idea of only sending something to you that would readily fit on mainstream TV is not a point that had occurred to me, although may be obvious to others on BSG!

:)

Wow, I didn't think the man himself would read this!

Thanks for the post. I'm currently polishing my script(third draft) and then I'll send it.

I think £75 is a nice price for such a service which is espeically helpful when the only 'training' you've had is from reading the books and it's my first script.

Didn't know the books where dumbed down. :O

If you have sent in a script in the past but since have made a polished, improved version would it cost the same price to have a re-read? (the script was originally Street Theatre by the way)

Hi Marc and thanks for the tips/advice. You will hopefully be hearing from me in the new year. :)

Quoted on Marc's testimonails? Is it legal?

Is Deferenz really Marc Blake?

So could I. And you're just given me it.

Does anyone have contact details for Marc? I tried using the wotsit on this website and never got anything back.

The Wotsit on this website should work. When did you send your details to Marc?
