Not Going Out - Series 4 Page 26

No problem. :)

Short answer:

He co-wrote all of Series 1, 5 of 8 episodes of Series 2, and one each of Series 3 and 4.

Does anyone know exactly which episodes Andrew Collins is credited with co-writing on the show? Am I correct in thinking that he co-wrote all of the episodes in the first series and then has gradually written fewer and fewer since?

Also, does anyone else think there is a big difference between his episodes and everybody else's? Very often he seems to focus on warmth and nostalgia with episodes featuring crazy golf, commemorative World Cup mugs and Subbuteo. The episodes that he doesn't co-write tend to focus on drugs, porn and masturbation. :)

It's kind of you to notice. But since Series 1 the team of scriptwriters has been expanded. As such, we are invited to pitch story ideas for episodes we'd like to co-write - or, sometimes, there is a pool of story ideas that Lee and the producer like, and these are shared out among the other writers. As a result, I have either come up with, or chosen, stories that appeal to me. I'm much less interested in writing about sex and porn and masturbation.

For the record, my sole episode in Series 3 was Winner, in which Lee falsely wins a competition prize, and that was my original idea. In Series 4, I wrote Debbie, which was an existing idea which I developed with Lee and the producer. Of all of the episodes I've been involved in as a co-writer, Winner remains my favourite. Everything just seemed to come together.

By the way, I know the speculation about Tim leaving has died down, but it's worth remembering that Lee and Tim are friends. They worked together on The Sketch Show, which is where they developed their rapport. In Series 1, it was more of a three-way sitcom. Since Series 2, we've made a concerted effort to give Lee and Tim more storyline where they go off and get into trouble together. This is because the relationship between them is really the beating heart of the show. I'm not sure it would be same if either of them left!

Thank you kindly for the reply and I completely agree about Winner. I think that was the stand-out episode of that series certainly and even a friend of mine who doesn't really like the show commented very positively on it.

After a very strong first series, I thought that the show lost its way a little in Series Two (Baby apart) due to having to introduce 3 new characters. The following two series have been an improvement I think but I still miss the warmth that was apparent in those earlier episodes.

Hi, Andrew Collins! It's me, @FlumblesMum!

I love your insights into the show!

If you do come back, I have a question, if you'll indulge me:

How much does Mack actually write? Because I get the impression he spends days on end, from 9 till 5 writing NGO, and then each episode has quite a few 'additional material' writers. How much do the additional material writers actually write?

I'm sorry I'm not too articulate; I pick up shit for a living. Errr

I wouldn't quite go along with that hierarchy - for me it's more like 1-2-3-4 - but I agree wholeheartedly that episodes with Andrew Collins's involvement are more satisfying and have a warmth to them that the later episodes generally lack. It hope if it comes back that it will revert to the warmer climes.

I have a question for Andrew; does your cat inspire your writing?

Ever since we ditched the arduous process of co-writing in the same room, which we managed for one series, it's been a case of a brainstorming meeting for each new episode, which used to take place in Lee's writing shed, and at which a storyline would be thrashed out over two days between three of us. (Simon Evans was the key third man on Series 2.) Then I would go away and write the first draft, and Lee would write the second draft. After that, the additional writers would add gags, or suggest gags, which might be added, and then there's the part of the process where the cast act the scripts out in front of a small live audience and the scripts are tweaked again depending on how they went down. Lee adds gags up until the point he says the words into a camera.

Some episodes my first draft has been fairly unrecognisable after Lee's draft, so it's far more him than me. With Winner, I was amazed how much was left in, as I'd written it. This is probably why I am so proud of it. But Lee is all over the programme. It's his show.

My cat inspires my life, and writing is a part of it. But I can't write with the cat in the room as she sits on my keyboard. That's why I don't write at home.

Cool. Thank you! :D

I enjoy Not Going Out but it is funnier with Miranda Hart.

Who, of course, has gone on to the greatest things.
I think Katy Wix is also a great talent who has brought loads to NGO.

Lezz

P.S. I still think Megan was Mega. The current repeats on Dave seem to show her a little out of place in NGO, but she is still a first class act.

Apparently Danny Cohen said at the Edinburgh International Television Festival that the fifth series is *not* confirmed? Can anyone clarify this?

Where did you hear that?

What Aaron said.

I and others heard it had been confirmed from Mack himself, so I don't know why he would say it had been confirmed when it hadn't. And I don't know how closely affiliated to Lee Mack the "LeeMackfirst" feed on twitter is, but they say the 5th series will air in January, 2012.

Yep, I'd just found that, and was coming here to post it. :(
