Newsjack - Series 5 Page 3

Remember his show?

He seems to be trying to take over from Screaming Lord Sutch, seeing as he now stands as a 'comedy terrorist' at by-elections.

Not as Bin Laden, though, it looks like his new schtick is pretending to be Jesus.

We also have had a few pieces on NewsThump (the biggest and best of the Onion rip-offs, ahem). They have about 15k followers on Twitter and 10k Fans on facebook. Now given not everyone reading is going to declare an interest you could argue that'a an audience of tens of thousands.

There's something about "quality of engagement" though - I know have ticked boxes for things on Twitter and Facebook that I've not subsequently given a second thought to. That said, I've put things on on the iPlayer that I've then not paid attention to because I'm doing other things. This would never apply to Newsjack, though. Never.

Q and A sesh today, anyone involved?

Eh? Where was that?

EDIT: Ah, up in Edinburgh, you mean. I think Ian's gone so hopefully he'll report back.

Dan

Yerse, I read about it on Twitter.

Any particular tweet in particular? All I seem to be getting is tweets from other people saying "Can I write a song for Newsjack?" "Newsjack is coming back" and so on. Nothing about Edinburgh.

Looking on their Twitter page there's talk of a Q'n'A sesh but no actual summary thus far.

A couple of questions for previous contributors.

For the first episode of the new series will they be looking to cover just recent events or the major stories since the last series ended?

If I'd written a sketch where one of the characters expresses a racist viewpoint, (The character is clearly a parody of a certain type of right-wing nutcase and the sketch in no way supports that view.) would they rule that out.

Hey 404,

To the second question - nah, they're pretty clue'd up. You should be fine with that.

As long as it's funny and you're not me then you'll get your stuff on ;-)

Depends. If the character actually uses racist terms then you can kiss the sketch goodbye. If the character is more generally racist but it isn't made very clear to the audience that they have to boo him, then it's more goodbye kisses.

But if the character is only vaguely racist and it is clear he is an idiot and the sketch is done as an interview with Miles then you might be in with a chance.

You may have heard that Newsjack, Radio 4 Extra's premier open-door topical sketch show (formerly BBC 7's premier open-door topical sketch show) is returning in a few weeks. I'm no longer involved

That's my chances of getting back on up in smoke then.

I don't really understand most of what Jinky says here. Least of all her reference to this "Miles" fellow.

When does this start?

15th September is the first broadcast date. So 12th September is the first writers deadline day.

I am feeling a touch rusty when it comes to topical sketches. Need to do some warm up exercises maybe.
