Holy Shit!!!

Cheers for posting that link, the meaty stuff starts at 4:00.
I had no idea about that! Oh my, I love Louis C.K and had never heard that story. F**king unbelievable! What a f**king hack!! The Hicks story Bill tells is pretty much the same, one day he passed him his album, said, here, listen to this, two weeks later Leary was performing the same bits.

Irony of ironies, beneath the vid is an iTunes link to buy Leary's song.

On that page you've posted, in the also reccomended bit theres a clip that says 'Joe Rogan on Hicks/Leary' I listened to that a while back and that's what got me into Joe Rogan.

I like Leary as an actor, but from what I've seen of his stand up his delivery style was pretty annoying. I suspect guys like him and Ben Elton used to be coked up when they went on stage.

Don't know much about Elton but yeah, Leary was a mad coke fiend. I think he was/is just a dick, a fake, and that's why he comes across as such. Kinnison was a cokehead too, but a lovable cokehead.

Makes sense.

Elton wasn't coked apparently.

He was a mixture of a mad over writer and an annoying cock. So he'd write a billion gags and race through them so fast he coulnd't be heckled.

Exceptional writer and easily the best topical polemicist. Till he started writing half arsed scifi and musicals.

Ah well, I have seen that much of Elton, he just seemed unusually manic.

I think of him as a Tory boy for some reason, but I suppose he was a left wing anti-Thatcherite! I suppose he might have switched now though.

True....Elton's never been near any wise-crack in his life. Yes indeedy.

Obviously Leary doesn't seem to have a lot of credibility.
But performance wise he's very good indeed.
No'one likes a comedy thief though.

Also that with Hicks you felt it came from the heart but with Leary it's more a persona for the stage...

Allow me to be the slowest ever follower-up but...
That's exactly how I feel. Also in those days this kinda stuff was still relatively rare so it must've been a conscious decision on Leary's part - not like the six billionth Sex Pistols imitator in '76. The frenetic delivery doesn't work for me these days either.
Nothing wrong with similar styles / subject matter but the similarities are too marked. They both compare wankers with good songs and good guys with wank songs - fine - but naming Barry Manilow out of all the possible examples...?
