London, London... I'd like to go there.
Decided to stay overnight and make a weekend of it. Got a room at the LSE while the students are away.
There's the best thing for budding comedy writers by the Olympic site at the moment. If you walk from Stratford towards the path from which you can see the Olympic stadium (good description, I know), there's like a vegetable garden. Loads of kids have made plaques about their school, but they are priceless. My favourite was "A boy who could not speak English had chiken pocks. I flapped my arms and chucked at him".
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I had a wander round the City of London on the Sunday morning, it was so deserted it was eerie, like a post apocolyptic world, all the massive skyscrapers, but hardly a person around.
I did go to Brick Lane, but didn't get a chance to shop in the market as it was early morning and they were all just setting up.
Also visited the Banqueting House on Whitehall with spectacular Rubens ceiling, and the Museum of London, which was fascinating. spent some time in Covent Garden, some great street performers. Also some good performance art on the South Bank.
Prices seem to have gone up even more since my last visit in 2010, the price of a pint of beer ranged from £3.70 to £4.50.
Oh, and The Shard looks amazing, can't wait to see it when it's finished.
There's a road I drive down regularly and between the trees on either side you can see all the new tall buildings grouped together. It looks like some sort of fairy kingdom!
Aw, it should look quite sparkly and pretty when it's done. As long as it's not too blinding in direct sunlight.

Next time you need to find yourself a Sam Smith's pub. There are a few in the west end, and it is something like £2.50 a pint. A disgrace, it was only a few years ago their lager was £1.64-ish.

That sounds like Brixton Hill.

It's the A217 at Banstead actually.
Or do you mean the fairy kingdom is Brixton?
Quote: 404 Not Found @ August 19 2011, 8:53 PM BSTI'm planning a daytrip to London tommorow, I've been to London many times and done all the main touristy places, can any of you Londoners suggest anything interesting to do or see that's a bit different not the normal touristy places.
Hope this keeps you busy-
Crossness Pumping Station in Thamesmead fantastic restored beam engines and extravagent wrought iron staircases in the world's first sewage pumping station.
More Vcitorian steam wonders can be found at the Kew Bridge Steam Museum.
The Dulwich Vintage Wireless Museum-it's some old bloke's front room and you have to book but you can also check out the weird and wonderful Hornimann museum while you're down there.
The Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising in Notting Hill.
The British Library Sci-Fi exhibiton is on til late September and its free.
The Camden Jewish museum has an exibibition called Entertaining a nation with promotion fronted by the late great Sid James.
Ronald Grant Cinema Museum in Kennington- impressive archive of all things cinema.
Wimbledon Thai Bhuddist temple and the Neasden Hindu temple- take some photos and tell your friends you've been spiritaul journey of discovery around Asia.
Chislehurst caves- they're caves and they're in Chislehurst
Samuel Smith pubs are not only cheap but they brew all the beer themselves and even make their own softdrinks.
Which are usually better than the crap you get else where.
And they are generally nice old style pubs.
Basically it's all good.

Their horrible beer is cheap for a reason.
if you join CAMRA you get £20 worth of 50p off vouchers at Wetherspoons and get some decent ale for under £2. Their discount Wednesday club also give much valuable excercise for retired alchoholics.
Thanks Youngian for the suggestions a bit too late for my recent trip but I'll make a note of them for my next London visit.
I'll definitely give the Samuel Smith pubs a try next time I'm in London and see whether the beer meets my high standards, ie does it get me drunk.
I might heading to London in February. what's good to do around then?
Go to Australia.
