Dilemma

"Last week I read with interest that Scottish what's on guide The Skinny will not be giving any performance at this year's Fringe anything less than two stars" http://www.chortle.co.uk/correspondents/2011/08/17/13808/the_star-t_of_a_problem

DILEMMA

(Man sitting at a desk. Another man walks in)

M1: Have you seen this? You've only gone and got a 5 star review!

M2: Yeah, I saw. So what?

M1: So what? It's FIVE stars.

M2: It's not five stars. It's the Prisoner's Dilemma.

M1: What?

M2: There's a prisoner on death row. They tell him "We'll execute you in August but
you won't know the day" So the man thinks to himself "They can't execute me
on the 31st because if it gets that far I will know the day. So that's the 31st out.
And, as they can't come round on the 31st then they can't leave it until the 30th
either, as I'll still know the day" So the guy uses that logic and works all the
way back until he decides that there isn't any day when they can execute him.
The prisoner's logic makes the execution impossible.

M1: What?

M2: It's the same here. That magazine stopped giving out one star reviews to avoid
upsetting people. But then everyone realised that a two star review was really a
one star review. So they stopped giving out two star reviews, and so on and so
on until every single review was a one star review. The magazine's logic
makes reviewing impossible.

M1: Yeah, but they changed the system yesterday and you've got five stars out of a
hundred.

M2: What??!!

M1: Shocking, isn't it? And by the way, your execution is later today.

M2: What???!!! What execution? I'm only in here for looting.

M1: Yeah, they changed the laws on that yesterday as well. Can't see the logic in
it myself.

(Apologies for the formatting and the piss-weak ending. Still, have fun critiquing it to death!)

I loved the double whammy of five out of a hundred, and then, the life sentence, that's funny. But I couldn't make head or tail out of the prisoner's logic thing, unless it's an ironic non-logic, in which case the problem's with me not the sketch.

The concept is based on a genuine logic problem but it turns out I made a mistake in calling it The Prisoner's Dilemma...

(There goes my chance of being the next Robin Ince....)

...as the correct title is The Unexpected Hanging

http://www.jimloy.com/logic/hanging.htm

5 out of a hundred is a reasonable ending to a snappy badumtish sketch.

This isn't, it's smug, over long and explains too much.

Also the prisoners dilema is someone else's so it's not very original.

Sorry.

Well, I can always go for a 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' remix....

Ford: It's the Prisoner's Dilemma

Arthur: The Prisoner's Dilemma?

Ford: Yes, The Prisoner's Dilemma

Arthur: What's the Prisoner's Dilemma?

Ford: The Prisoner's Dilemma? Well.....

Book: The Prisoner's Dilemma is a little known....(goes on for 5 minutes with everyone thinking 'This is the best bit')

Arthur: Ahhh....The Prisoner's Dilemma! Now I understand!

Ford: Yes, The Prisoner's Dilemma.

Better?

(As for 'explaining too much', I think it's the biggest problem with the sketch. If the Open University had Footlights, I'd probably be able to let it go...but how on earth can you do a sketch about a logic problem to a wider audience without explaining the problem first?)

When I think about 'The Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy', and the fact it has a fanbase, it makes me feel sad. Why would you do that Jinky? Why would you want to make me feel sad?

Oh come on!

Hitchhikers is the last great Radio 4 comedy ever made.

(But it's still a bit rubbish when you listen to it nowadays....apart from Peter Jones, obviously)

Anyway, stop feeling sad and do a non-smug rewrite.

There's no copyright involved here, so rip me off and make some money!!!

Don't bother?

or

GUARD
We're going to execute you one day in August and not tell you the date so you don't worry.

PRISONER
Well it won't be the 31st because I know it will be the last day and it won't be the 30th. So you logically won't be able to execute me...aaaggghh

GUARD SHOOTS PRISONERS

GUARD
Surprise! It's such a waste of time letting the c**ts do Open University courses.

Brutal....but strangely arousing.

But I want to have my cake and eat it and also include the whole idiotic '2 star review' that inspired the sketch in the first place.

I like it, the frustration element made it really funny, I imagined it being acted out by Smith & Jones type characters.
