British Comedy Guide

Are you serious?

I was listening to a programme about comedy films over the years.

Justifiably they mentioned Peter Sellers as being a great star of British comedy films in the 60s and 70s.

However they suggested that Hugh Grant was the equivalent for the 80s and 90s.

Apart from the fact Hugh Grant played in several British comedy films you can't in all honesty suggest that Grant has anywhere near Sellers' comedy brilliance, talent and natural sense of humour.

What other actor from the 80's would you suggest? Richard E Grant?

I've never seen Hugh Grant laughing in a lift !

Truly one of the greatest moments in comedy history.

(All be it an outtake)

No, he's not in Sellars league, but he's quite talented. Ironically one of my favourite Grant films is that one thriller he did about spinal injury. "You're quite creepy, aren't you?"

He's very good at rom coms. (And I love rom coms)
But never would have imagined anyone would compare him to Sellers.

I was a bit tongue in cheek with my suggestion, I do love Richard E Grant, but the 80's were a pretty lean time, acting wise. If you know what I mean?

He is very good at rom coms but they trapped him. It'll be interesting to see how his career progresses now he's too old for them.

Hugh Grant seems to me a total lightweight and to compare him to Peter Sellers is quite farcical.

Grant is very good at what he does, but obviously what he does is much more limited than what Sellars could do. They're two very different performers.

I wonder who, film-wise, you could compare to someone like Sellars; British or otherwise. I remember Sacha Baron Cohen getting that label a few years back.

He's great in Bridget Jones; he suits being the swine.

As far as I'm concerned the only good thing Hugh Grant has been in is Liz Hurley.

Oh dear.

I think it goes.

60' Sellers
70's Askwith
80's Atkinson
90's Enfield
00's Freeman
10+ Cotter?

Since we're being bitchy! I've never understood the adulation for this man. He strikes me as a creepy Tony Blair type.

Have you seen his films? He is actually quite charismatic and amusing. If you like those kind of films.
