Torchwood... Page 49

I think the problem I've always had with Torchwood is that I've never engaged with the team or any of the characters, they always seemed so disparate.
I like it only because it's part of the Whoniverse & you might see a Sexy Cyberlady from time to time.
So whenever they say things like "Welcome to Torchwood" I always wonder if anyone really cares.
And JB can smile as smarmily as he likes but it doesn't change anything for me.

I managed to engage with Martha Jones for crying out loud.
Don't make me work that hard all the time.

The name was apparently a codename they used at the start of new Who for communication. Then the name stuck, and they started to think what it could be; and so it was used in series 2 of Who, and then used as the basis of a spin off featuring Captain Jack. But it's supposed to be its own thing.

It is not a very good own thing anymore. I don't see any heart to it. You need that or cleverness in sci fi.

I can forgive Torchwood a lot, what I can't forgive it is its snails pace. Children of Earth at least zoomed. This one doesn't.

I haven't found it slow at all.
Maybe I am easily excited.

Interesting premise but far too slow. Dialogue is even for RTD in parts awful. 'Whatever is happening to this planet, it is massive' is just one among many clunkers. And I'd like to know where they found a plane so quiet that avoided all turbulence for soooooo long.

I've said it before and about to say it again, it's easy in some of these discussions to ignore the fact that when people say "It is awful" or "It is clunky" or "It is moving at a snails pace" what is unsaid is the prefix "For me..."

So "For me it's moving at a snail's pace", "For me it felt clunky".

Because of peoples different backgrounds, experiences, likes and dislikes no-one can really say with any degree of accuracy "It's awful" ect...

No I'll go back to lurking... oh by the way I really am enjoying it at the moment

Me neither. It's no Children Of Earth so far, but I've quite enjoyed it.

Still not seen it. Will probably wait now and just watch them all together.

Jeezy Creezy.

Production values Matthew. Watch it and generally its streets ahead of what we've seen previously because it's US co-produced. I don't care if you think I'm being (insert whatever epithet you feel appropriate) but the stuff on the plane wasn't done up to the same standard. Even if you want to ignore the lack of ambient noise, then they could at least tried for continuity with JB's make up.

My take on it is that it is really a five parter that's been padded out to ten to make it just about acceptable to the US viewer because their 'seasons' run about four times the length that series do in the UK.
Still preferring Children of Earth so far and wonder if the Beeb really should have gone for a similar transmission schedule as we're getting it later than the US anyway.

And if you think I've been rude abut the dialogue, don't go near the Guardian blog. A few very cruel people on there have opined that Bonekickers was better scripted.

I remember reading an interview with RTD after Children of Earth in which he stated that he could have easily made Children of Earth twice as long. He said that once the state of emergency had been declared it could have cheerfully run for ten or thirteen episodes. And that's what he's done with this one. I mean what actually happened in Thursdays episode? Nothing, it was essentially 60 minutes of a gay man and a screeching Welsh woman being transported cross the Atlantic.

It's watchable, but disappointing so far. And, alas, it's not even as good as FlashForward or The Event.
