British Comedy Guide

Visiting the UK

Hi. I'm a big fan of stand-up and I'm going to be in London for a weekend next month. Any suggestions on how I can see the most comedy?

There's a night called Old Rope just ne'er Oxford Street where you can see TV comedians practicing new material for only £5. I'd recommend that.

It's on a Monday though, not a weekend gig.

Weekends, try the Comedy Store, Funnyside of Covent Garden, The 99 Club or any of a multitude of other comedy nights within a 1 mile radius of Leicester Square.

Bear in mind that generally, the more you pay the better the line up, (Comedy Store acts are not allowed to double up within a certain radius of the Store) but you'll find some fantastic line ups at some of the smaller-to-medium sized gigs.

Also, if you are coming to London before August you'll have the opportunity to see some big names doing Edinburgh previews at places like the Soho Theatre, Hen and Chickens in Islington, the Etcetera Theatre in Camden, etc, etc.

Thanks, I'll check those out. I've noticed from the websites I've found that most places only have one show per night. Are there venues that start considerably earlier or later then the rest so I could get to two in one night?

The Comedy Store usually have a late show at the weekend which starts at about 11pm to midnight.

I totally didn't read the weekend bit.

I noticed coming through the airports that a lot of places took euros as well as pounds. Is that just in airports or can euros now be spent easily everywhere?

I've never seen anyone pay for anything with Euros in normal shops.

Check out Canal Cafe Theatre for London's world famous News Revue and other assorted weirdness

Only in selected tacky tourist shops.

And you'll get bilked on exchange rates.

Euros will identify you as a cheese eating surrender monkey bailing out a bunch of SOuthern European P.I.G.S. Most of whom retire at the age of 5 before ever starting work. Not only that but the English are the only people in Europe with a sense of humour, so most Europeans are strictly banned from comedy clubs. You are fortunate to be landing in the last bastion, of humour, decency, good beer, hair free pornography in this whole benighted continent.

So leave your Euros behind, they'll soon have all the worth of an EU comissioner's conciense.

No worries, I managed to spend all my euros in Spain before I got here.

I've seen four shows in two nights (two were great, one was good, one was crap) and I'm planning on one more tonight. It's been a great trip, I'll definitely be coming back sometime.

Make sure you buy some News Of The Worlds as souvenirs for the folks back home!

Wow! 4 shows on one night, that's pretty impressive... Don't know if you enjoyed them all as 4 shows in just one night seems a bit much... Hope you went out because it's the main asset of London. Did you see any theatre shows like Yes, Prime Minister, which is a comedy as well? Right now there are quiet a few good comedies and musicals at a good price. I went to see a couple of them in the past year and enjoyed most of them. Good music and good acting. Yes, Prime Minister is a must see if you come down to London. I did a trip last month to see Shrek The Musical which was pretty funny, with a good soundtrack and some funny jokes you should give a try...but before going you have to have watched the movies in order to appreciate to the fullest.
