Steve Coogan on Newsnight Page 2
Interestingly Coogan did a very good job in a TV movie many years back playing a young Mike Gabbet, the hack who exposed a big match fixing scandal for the Sunday People in the early 60s. Coogan played him as cynical but nevertheless likeable character. I wonder if he would play the bloke with the same amount of sympathy these days.

It's been interesting watching the rest of the papers getting riled at anybody who appeared to stick the knife into NoW.

I think Steve Coogan did well on Newsnight.
It seemed odd to me that Paul McMullan's defence was to go on about how much money Coogan had indirectly made from one of Rupert Murdoch's companies. I don't see how that would affect things.
Either Rupert Murdoch got him the part in "Night at the Museum" as a favour, and in return he must never breathe a word against any of Murdoch's companies no matter what they may write or say about him. Like some sort of gangster hush money pact.
Or
Coogan auditioned for a part in a film, got it, did the acting and got paid the going rate for supporting cast.
It's not as if we don't know film actors get paid lots.
Paul McMullan doesn't come across well at all, he was dreadful on 10 O'Clock Live too. It's a possible publicity punt for an upcoming book perhaps?
Greg Dyke had a good point about how this won't silence the press, as broadcasting has always been regulated and they are still able and often deal with, and uncover serious issues.
I couldn't stop hearing Alan Partridge however, particularly when Coogan says "Hitler was nice to dogs." 
Sorry I'll shut up now.
Steve may as well be a medium, constantly channeling Alan. I just can't shake the two apart.

Seriously the Mail accusing anyone of sickening hypocrisy is, well, sickening hypocrisy.
If the lid all blows off of this, and there is enough arse-covering going on with the politicos and the police that it just might, then all the redtops are going to be implicated.

It's as though the Mail have no idea what this story is all about. The article reports tittle tattle based on previously reported tittle tattle, some of which may originally have been sourced by hacking phones. In what way do they think this makes Coogan the bad guy?

That's why it's been a facinating fortnight, because when you read the other tabloid papers (despite paying lip service to the outrage) it's clear they don't see what all the fuss has been about. They've learnt nothing.
I quite fancied that Paul McMullen, he was very witty and outdid Coogan almost as a 'Cooganesque' character.
Yes, I am a deviant respondant, always have been. 
Out of curiosity I had a look at The Sun this morning; finally found an article on phone hacking on page 9. But, yes, it's not just The Sun, all the tabloids are head in the sand on this one.
I saw Clegg's speech this morning, which was actually pretty good; even if Cameron and would prefer to see this quietly go away once the fuss has died down (and no doubt that duplicitous bastard O'Donell will throw up all the obstacles he can) this has given the LIbDems a cause they can get their teeth into and a chance for some payback. An independent regulator with some teeth has got to be the outcome.
