Steve Coogan on Newsnight

Steven Coogan was a guest on Newsnight tonight and very good he was too.

It doesn't usually come onto iPlayer until the very early morning but it's worth watching for the sustained and passionate attack he makes on a Dickensian and cheesy-looking News of the World journo who has the temerity to appear.

Will Self is also on towards the end for those of you who like drawling psueds who feel the need to use words like quondam on a mainstream TV.

Will "Up'im" Self more like!

*high-five*

*shakes hands with Lee*

That's not my hand... although I appreciate the gesture.

What a complete twat he was too.

It's a good confrontation, although it's eerily reminiscent of Alan Partridge taking on slimy PR Man Lawrence Knowles in Knowing Me, Knowing You.

I saw this. Coogan did well, though helped by the rentagob journo who has been doing the rounds all week.

:) So agree, however 'journo' hack did catch Coogan out, with his remark 'You have participated in a Murdoch funded film for a million pounds, how many houses have you bought with that'?

I know it's awful but I quite liked the nerve of the 'hack'!

You're not alone, Dellas. I did as well. He was very honest about what he did, although he seemed motivated by envy, more than anything, which is not a good excuse for doing what he did. He's put himself up to be reviled and shot at by celebs like Grant and Coogan, which took a bit of bottle, I imagine. The best point he made was 'The 90% of sleaze we do funds the big investigations like the expenses scandal.'

But I wouldn't want to have a drink with the bloke and his attacks on Coogan courting publicity were way off, as he's one of the few that don't want to or need to. It was very important to get one of those hacks on TV though. He looked unrepantant and totally sleaze centered. Coogan looked like he wanted to take him out.

I thought he was dreadful, he lost his temper, shouted and was easily caught out.

Which one, Coogan, or the hack? I was impressed by Coogan's passion, myself. I always had him down as a cool and aloof type but he was very impassioned. Good to see in your favourite artistes.

The expenses scandal was down to The Daily Telegraph, I think. NoW would claim their biggest success is Sara's Law, which a lot of professionals think is counterproductive as it drives paedos underground.

They were my words, I think he said catching MPs with their trousers down and their hands in the till or something, but it's a general point I meant it as.

I don't really agree with the methods of setups and entrapments BUT it has sorted out some very shady people and organisations. Like Fifa. The Met are next in line. That's going to be a very interesting one.

Absolutely

:) Thanks Alf! I thought I was the only one who 'takes a lateral glance' at life.
I do like Coogan agree about his anger, imagine if he turned into Paul Calf and headbutted the 'hack' great telly, historic op' missed! :P
