CBBC Get a Squiggle On - New Writing Competition 2011 http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/opportunity/get_a_squiggle_on.shtml

Deadline: 14th July 2011

As CBeebies enters an exciting new chapter with the move to Salford, we are seeking out fresh voices - giving promising writers from different backgrounds, communities and life experiences an opportunity to develop their professional skills.

You might never have written for a pre-school audience; you might be new to writing completely. What we are interested in is original stories, authentic voices and compelling characters that are rooted in identifiable places anywhere in the country (from the Scillies to Shetland, Newry to Newcastle) and of course that connect with our audience.

But wherever you set it, remember to let your imaginations run wild!

We are looking for 20-minute live action scripts. They can be written in any contemporary genre, including Drama, Comedy, Music, Dance, Puppets, Educational (with a light touch) or a combination of more than one. This opportunity is open to anyone interested in writing for CBeebies.

A shortlist of 20-25 writers will be invited to a masterclass and the final 8-10 shortlisted writers will spend an intensive residential week developing their work, bolstering their writer's 'toolbox' and craft, and working with the CBeebies team.

How to enter:

Entrants must submit:

a script (one copy) for children's television between 20-30 minutes in length (approximately 1 page per minute) suitable for children aged 3-6.
an outline for how the series would develop.
a completed entry form - download an entry form.

I've been trying to write something for this but I've had a shitty few weeks so I haven't really had the time to do anything more than get my ideas down.

Bit late to be attempting a script now I think!

I'm currently on my 2nd draft for this. Quite happy with what I have, but have never tried to write for kids before, so it might be way of the mark.

Anybody else going for it?

Laughing out loud love the way people know about these opps but don't post them! :P

What do you expect ContainsNuts? It makes sense to check out things like Writers Room and other places rather than relying on this forum.

I rely on this forum for all my information.

I sit at my desk in work for 8 hours constantly pressing refresh on the BBC writers room page. Then I go home.

If I take out the auto-erotic asphyxiation bits, I've got quite a nice script for this.

I'm never even met a 3-6 year old, let alone written for them. None-the-less, my entry is entitled: 'Uncle Poppie's Drug Pit!'

They're into meth, right?

I'm as guilty as anyone. I knew about it to, although I'm not here as much as I used to be. Look how I try and cover myself.

Would have loved to have done something for this. Horrible Histories has certainly opened the door for more comedy for kids.

My entry is about an academic who survived the Stalinist purges and keeps having flashbacks to this time. his daughter who's long bitter marriage is collapsing arround her and a journalist who is investigating the academic because he suspects he was never in Russia at the time whom falls in love with the daughter and sacrifices his career to become a lens grinder in Omsk.

Or I might write about an elephant who loses his balloon instead.

The Stalin thing. Every time. Kids aren't stupid!

Were you kept in isolation? Did you never go to school?

Ha.
Written well, that would probably make me cry. Sounds very sad. :(
