I was having a "debate" with one of their supporters but genuinely couldn't understand because he had such a strong accent. I asked for an interpreter and his wife called me an English racist bastard!!!

i think i understand the question as "why can other groups of people mock themselves but we, as english people can't". please correct me if i'm wrong.
i suspect that the answer is that "the english" as a race or nation or people (predominantly white), over the years have "dominated" other groups of people such as welsh, irish, scots, black, indian etc mainly through colonial activities. if we, as english comedians mocked those groups from being in the position of bully or aggressor then it wouldn't be that funny.
i suspect that it would be funny to mock those groups who have been aggressive towards "us" e.g. nazis, romans, vikings, our own upper classes and recently the americans.
i'm not politically informed really, so this is just a guess. don't know much about the potato famine either although alan partridge did a funny joke about it.

We live in a culture where those who are perceived to be the majority can't make the slightest criticism or hint of difference in any way between them and someone else. If they do, they're automatically labelled as sexist, racist, or whatever the flavour is. It's all bollocks. I have never experienced racism in England against ANYONE which is even near the extent I saw in Edinburgh towards the English.
