18) More thoughts: foreign script alphabet letters are often represented in english as words, as in "alpha" etc. from the Greek, etc etc.. (.. also the case with our phonetic alphabet: foxtrot, x-ray etc.)..
So.. the word "an" may be our western representation of a chinese letter/character in Mandarin/Cantonese/whatever, and "An-An" or some such repeated syllable could be the answer to this..
