Woah, woah! People. Let's just establish one thing. I wasn't saying it was racist. Although you have to be careful how you do it. And that's a whole separate argument for another thread. ;)

I just meant it was poorly done and rather pointless. I have seen some of his other shows. This is not one of his best IMO.

This episode is so much back on form!

Very funny.

I thought it was pretty decent. Gran didn't burn quite as bright as the first time we met her, yet still produced some good laughs. I also quite enjoyed the testicle-free man and his Fat Surfer's Camp.

Still seems a bit rambling and lacking in focus (unlike Lilley's previous offerings), but overall I'm enjoying the series.

I am glad that he has decided to go the comedy-drama route with this show. He has tweleve episodes to fill and if they were crammed with jokes it could just end up being overkill - too much awkwardness, offensiveness/crudery. He has always broken up his humour with other tensions, but I am glad that this is more dramatic due to the length. There is more serious stuff coming, but it is still very funny.

It's not Summer Heights High. But Gran is just delciious not least of all because she's a mix of being a proper monster and also really nice and human.

The way they can spin between her doing her hilarious faux prison camp, to really feeling for her when she got a bollocking. Taht's where Lilley is a genius.

But next week seems to be back to the dreary S.Mouse and Dragon Mum so may give it a miss.

As opposed to what? It follows exactly the same template as We Can Be Heroes and Summer Heights High.

Its more like "We Can Be Heores" in tone - but darker. "Summer Heights High" definitely landed on the more humourous end of satire. The latter was definitely designed to provide more laugh-out-loud moments.
The idea of having two consistent central characters as a linking device and other characters who impact on their world is also different - and this is the first time that two different characters from different settings have interracted (The Sims boys and Gran).

Summer Heights High seemed more serious minded and was deffo more of a docusoap sitcom, it reminded me a lot of The Office.

I think the loser more played for laughs feel of Angry Boys actually makes it quite distinctly less funny.

Certainly the 2 comedy only characters are easily the weakest.

I always thought that "Summer Hight's High", while savagely satirical, had two characters out of three that mainly provided laughs (and wonderfully so, I might add).
Which characters from "Angry Boys" are you talking about - S.Mouse and Blake - I imagine?

Summer Heights High was pretty dark, namely with Jonah and his story. I think the confusion over which are the out and out "funny" characters in this is down to its uneven tone.

I think the drama is soon to come for Blake and Smouse, Blake is building up to a break down with his family and the risk of gang violence is always on the horizen threatening him, his best freind and his family (and his potential artificial balls).

Smouse's life is already crumbling around him as he realizes he is nowhere near as popular as he once was, but he can still fall futher losing his girlfreind, best freind and mabye even his dad. It may emerge that he ends up with much less than he started with before he became a rapper.

If Chris somehow makes me as emotional on behalf of Smouse the same way he did with Jonah in SHH (I cried, no shame [aslong as its on the internet and nobody knows me ;) ]) I will truely regard him as one of the greatest actor-writers I have had the pleasure to witness.

EDIT: I'm not sure why anyone would consider Smouse a comedy character

Eh?

ALL of Lilley's characters are comedy creations, even if he's trying to say something serious with them. Some clearly work better than others.

I'd say S.Mouse and Dragon lady are pure comedy and poorer for it.

Blake, Nathan, Nan are comedy-dramatic and much funnier, more entertaining for it.

@Chipolata
Yep that is true. As much as I love Chris as an actor and writer, all comedy characters can be hit and miss and I feel that Smouse, for me, and I am sure for many others, is a complete miss.
I don't understand where the homour from the character comes from, but I can see the intent to make him a funny character. I am not suggesting he is in the show purly for drama, I'm sorry if it came across that way though.

Edited:just misread your post so altered mine a bit.

No, I think he'll also layer depth into them as the series progresses (which he's already done a bit wit S.mouse).
