Sitcom Trials Manchester 2011 - scripts invited Page 27

I got pretty much the same top ten in the same order.

I'll upload the spreadsheet to the group if anyone's interested?

Dan

Yes please, and thanks very much indeed for doing that Dan. If we were to do this again would you be interested in doing that kind of adjudication again? I certainly don't enjoy it, or think myself the person best suited to do it.

I have passed on the Top Ten scripts to Lisa and the Manchester team, with a recommendation that they perform the top four if they can, and choose a fifth script from that Top Ten based on their own judgement. I've asked them to tell me in advance, so I can let you, the writers, know as soon as possible which scripts will be performed, so you can come to the show if you're in it.

The Manchester team will have the say on whether they deem scripts unperformable. I've been quite easy going about small details in your scripts, I was happy for them to be funny. If any of that Top Ten will turn out to make no sense on stage if we have to lose the crucial location film featuring the trampolining nuns, then be prepared for the performers having to make that harsh decision.

Thanks to everyone for taking part in this process. It is, I realise, hard and can seem unfair. Those who got lots of "No" votes may feel demoralised, and those who are just outside the Top Ten may feel cheated. Those who are in the Top 5 and don't end up getting performed may well feel like committing an atrocity at the event itself. Please don't.

We'll do this again sometime. Now, let's have fun at the live show on Saturday. There'll be some people from Doctor Who there, I'm told.

I believe I counted 7 points for my script, but I will settle with 4.
What do you win for 4 points? Is it something rubbish like cheese tokens?

I will now be making a decision, along with the Manchester Sitcom Trials team, as to which of those scripts get performed on July 2nd. We will advise you as soon as the decision is made.

Kev F... you continue to astound me, publishing minus scoring on peoples work?? Love that Executive Producer credit by the way. That one is a yes from me!

I take that back, I actually love cheese. When do I get the cheese tokens Kev?

Would this get Dan an Exec Producer credit? I say go for it Dan!

No probs. It's in here: http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/SitsVac/files/

I've tried to colour-code it for clarity. If you want the results in order, highlight the results and click the 'A^vZ' button and select 'Expand the selection' and click 'Sort' and you should get them in order.

There are totals on the far right that include the 'what-I-considered-non-critiqued' reviews (3 of them). Obviously, these (and others) are probably considered contentious, so Kev has final say.

Oh, and sure, Kev, I can do it again in future. Though the spreadsheet is there now and it's probably easy enough to change. The more nebulous definitions of what counts as proper or not is the hardest bit! :)

Yes, of course I published the minus scores. Forgive me if I didn't make it clear from the start that this process was going to take place in public and that it is always my aim to make it as transparent as possible. Had I not published the scores, I would have been asked to publish them.

As I've said before, there are other sitcom competitions where your scripts will be selected in private and you may have to depend on one person's opinion. The Sitcom Trials, in its classic form (to which this is a slight return) is a democratic arrangement by which the widest number of participants have a say in the choice of the scripts, then the audience choose the winner.

And this one's only taking place on one night in Manchester. Imagine if we were to roll this out on a bigger scale, with a bigger audience, in a bigger city. I know. Terrifying idea isn't it?

Stay tuned

Also, will we be seeing the rest of your reviews? I doubt very much I'm going to get through to the Lass O'Gowrie but, as an 'A' script, your feedback would be really useful. Thanks.

Without wanting to get too technical, how will the decision be made as to which scripts will be performed? I imagine the ease of staging them will be a factor; will the preferences of the actors have some bearing on the decision too?

Well done everyone who entered for being bold enough to put forward your script into the public domain and well done the top ten for being the top ten.

Hi Humberfloob, sorry I didn't get the time to read, review and vote on the first scripts in the alphabetical list, I just ran out of time, then spent two nights toting up everyone else's votes. But, like I said, my votes don't count for any more than anyone else's, flattered though I am when anyone suggests otherwise.

Kev F

Not taking un-critiqued votes seems a bit unfair. Some people may gain and others lose purely because people who voted for them didn't add their reasons. This is not the fault of the writer.

Ok, I think I may have pipped fifth place because of this from Jim Coulson (who must genuinely be sick as a parrot).

As a fair method of resolving this I suggest we re-run the competition with a brand new vote and writers submitting completely new scripts that have nothing to do with the originals. ;) Or else we can ask the people who didn't critique to submit their critiques? I know the rules have been stated etc. etc, but I'll be honest, I didn't read them fully myself and it seems wrong.

Thanks Kev. As someone just outside the top ten I can honestly say I've really enjoyed the whole process. And I don't think anyone can seriously question that those at the top deserve to be there.
