My mate has been on a dating site for about 3 months and met 3 women from there for relaxed dates (all above board and no sexy shenanigans went on, apparently). Anyway, he's been with the 3rd woman he met for about 6 weeks now and he seems really happy. She is normal and all that, too.
So, I was thinking about 'joining up'. But.....I'm really shy and the thought of meeting someone for a date, however relaxed/casual, would be a bit awkward (Yes, I'm a wimp). So, paying the monthly fee could be a waste of money if I didn't go through with the meet-ups.
I know there are a few free ones, but I assume they are the ones that attract the chavs/weirdos/serial killers, right?

Yes, but they also attract people just like you, who don't want to waste good money on a dating site, so you might actually find a like-minded soulmate in amongst the rest. What's more, as a bloke, you don't have to worry so much about bad dates, at worst you'll only tend to suffer from disappointment, whereas women on those free sites have reported some properly frightening stories.
Probably best to check out a few sites and see whether the sort of women are signing up are what you are looking for. You are likely to meet a different sort of lady on Amishdating.com to slappers4u.org.

You could try Plenty of Fish which is free and there are some normals there.
Depends on your age too. Senior Dating worked perfectly for me but I guess you're not that old. You have to really chat a bit first to get a real idea.

You can do that to an extent, but I found that a lot of women wanted to actually meet up pretty quickly. Of course, that might have been because I'm so dashed attractive, but I assumed they didn't want to waste time chatting to someone who turns out to be an armpit in real life.

I met both my previous boyfriend and my current boyfriend online... mysinglefriend and match respectively.
I much more prefer meeting people this way as you find people who are like minded.
The free sites (plenty of fish) just attracted people who wanted a sh@g and that's it. So the paid one for me were much better.
However, my friend did meet someone nice on POF. So it can work.
I still think you have to see someone in the flesh first to see if you have that grrr factor.
Definitely... I don't mess around emailing for weeks... I meet up with them and unless there's a physical connection I don't bother seeing them again.
