McCartney bugged me with all his Heather Mills, suit-jackets and trainers, thumbs-up, trying to be cool. But Lennon was so self absorbed and deluded, his 'work' with Ono was indulgent cr@p.
The best Beatle was Harrison. He was the most real member of the band. 'While my guitar gently weeps' is one of the best songs ever. and all that love rivalry with Clapton gave us 'Something' and 'Layla' - classics.

I can tell you that, on stage, it was a draw !
After The Beatles is slightly different. For my money Wings was rubbish even though it contained one of my heroes of the 60s, Denny Lane. (used to see The Moody Blues every Saturday as the resident band at the Casino Club, Walsall).
But, when Paul did his Cavern show with Dave Gilmour and chums, I thought that was superb.
Meanwhile John was making great music, Working Class Hero, Woman etc and a milestone album with Rock and Roll.
So, all things considered, taking the situation as a whole, looking at both sides, taking all the arguments into account, my view?
A very definite draw.
But thanks a lot to both of them.
I think a draw is the only fair overall conclusion.
The only reason Macca doesn't get the credit he deserves is cos he had the bad luck not to get gunned down in 1980. Meanwhile Lennon's legend lives on despite him not recording anything decent in the nine years before his death.

Band on the Run, Jets, great songs, I think most people can't separate McCartney from the Beatles so Wings are seen as less than, when they were just the new direction Paul took, he seemed to have a bit of fun with Wings...'does a thumbs up sign' 
It's a tough one, but I'll go for Macca, because of his unique voice. I love the way he could effortlessly go from really low notes to really high screaming.
By the way, my Great Uncle Tommy told me that he once had to grab a young McCartney by the scruff of his neck, and throw him out of the snooker hall that he ran, back in the late '50s, because he'd been behaving too rowdily.
As for Lennon, someone mentioned Working Class Hero, but I'm not sure he even was working class. He lived in a Semi-detatched house in a leafy suburb, he was friends with Peter Sissons, who was in his class at school, and now reads the news, and his Aunt Mimi, with whom he lived, even had her own cleaner. McCartney, on the other hand, lived on a coucil estate.
Oh, and Ringo didn't really trash Liverpool. All he said was that he didn't miss anything about his old life, before the Beatles. He used to live in a terraced house in Toxteth, and now he has a ranch, not far from Monte Carlo, I think.
Though I think McCartney wrote a poetry book, Lennon wrote more:The Spaniard in the Works, In His Own Write and Skywriting by Word of Mouth (Lucy in Sky with Diabetes). Mostly forgotten nowadays, though.

It would have been interesting to see what Lennon would have been doing in 2011, or through the 80s/90s dance eras, etc.
I also read elsewhere a thread asking which modern bands Lennon would have liked had he lived. Lots of posters were saying 'he'd love Lady Gaga'. And maybe he would have, but in one of his last interviews he gave he said he didn't listen to any of the new bands around at the time (except Madness and a few others I forget) and that his thing was 1950s rock and roll. So, would a 71 year-old bloke really be listening to Lady Gaga??
And, to add to this long post.......I doubt the Beatles would have re-united at all.
They would certainly have reunited. It would have been naff and expensive to see but there would've been so much money in it they wouldn't have said no. Don't forget Macca and Lennon were on their best terms for probably 11 years when he died.
And the reunion circus of today is pretty unstoppable anyway.
Yeah, they could have supported Take That on their reunion tour.
