Quote: Aaron @ June 13 2011, 1:47 AM BSTIs that an offer or a strange northern shop? Either way, luckily unfamiliar with it as it sounds like a little bit of a rip off!
Virgin customers offer.
North of Watford syndrome kicking in Sooty?
Don't tend to witter inanely on my mobile so rarely get near the limit.
Anyway, got to go and feed some more ferrets to the whippets before brass band practice.
Fat-Booth is a fun little free app, take pictures of your friends faces and make them look fat.
You can have some fun making time lapse videos with free app Time Lapse Lite, It's somewhat limited, there's a full version available for something like 69p if you like it.
Also theres a thing called telephone, you type in some numbers and you can speak to your friends, can't see that one catching on much though.
Google Maps/Navigator is handy when out and about.
Google Sky Maps is fun too.
Pubtran is handy for looking up train times. RealCalc is probably the nicest looking calculator app I've tried if you need one occasionally.
Oh, and Zombiebooth is fun.
And get a Barcode Scanner if you're wondering what my avatar is all about.
For the record, I have an HTC Incredible S (lovely phone, stupid name) and just about to switch to GiffGaff - 250mins, unlimited texts, unlimited internet - £10/month.
Another shout for Dolphin Browser HD, though Skyfire has Flash support.
Get Swype before you get anything else. It is a most excellent way of keyboarding. (SlideIT does a similar sort of thing if you have a smaller, incompatible screen)
Gmote: it turns your android into a remote control for your pc. Most excellent for when you're watching stuff on it plugged into the telly.
Catch: for note-taking. Evernote is good too.
AA and RAC: Travel news.
ASTRO: File manager
Advanced Task Killer: useful in some cases.
Bebbled: Fun, puzzle game.
CallBlocker: mobile phone companies trying to sell you stuff and ring thousands of times without leaving a single message? Then use this.
CamScanner: Take a picture of a document, and it turns it into a pdf. (Not awesome but perfectly usable)
ColorFlashlight: Don't fall over your wife's shoes when trying to scramble into bed.
DocumentsToGo (Free version): Lets you read .doc, .xls, .pdfs from your phone (paid for version lets you edit) but this is really good for the writers around here as you can check/read your scripts.
Dropbox: keep your documents in 'the cloud' so you can see them from your phone.
Goggles: scan barcodes and just stuff and Google will tell you how much it is online, what something is and where you are!
Noom: track how much exercise you're doing, what you're eating. MyTracks will also track walks/drives and stats.
OurGroceries: put stuff on the list while you're at home. Cross it off while you're shopping. Better still, send wifey to shops and keep adding stuff while she's there
ParkDroid: Tells you nearest parking places to where you are (not used, but may be useful)
PubTran: public transport
London: Single-most useful thing -- just a pdf of the underground!
RockPlayer/ArcMedia: stuff that plays media files so you can watch 30 Rock and The Office: US whilst on the train.
Shazam: for recognising any music you're passing.
TipNSplit: Need to work out how much you owe at a restaurant?
AppSaver: backup your applications
WaveSecure: paid for, but it's a security app. You can block your phone and track it down if someone nicks it. Even wipe it remotely if you think it's gone.
The best thing is, without doubt, Google Maps Navigation. It makes your phone a SatNav and is most likely already there via 'Maps'.
I have a Sony Xperia X10, which I bought primarily for the big screen to watch telly on the train into London, more than anything else. The version of Android is no longer being upgraded though which is massively annoying as it's the last release before Pro Evolution Soccer is compatible

Yup. Might be a bit slower, but you could always change the setting before using it for an extended time.

Thanks for that. Just what I'm looking for.

It's sim only PAYG - the £10 add on gives you all that, rather helpfully.
Vodafone have pissed me off one time too many and when I phoned up to complain they pissed me off some more instead of apologising.
So f**k 'em.
I bought a new phone and GiffGaff offers a much better deal than they've bothered to.
I especially like their unlimited internet - with Vodafone they say unlimited but mean "if you go over 500mb we'll automatically charge you extra...but that's not a limit, honest guv."
With GiffGaff unlimited appears to mean "please try not to go over 20gb too often or we might have to send you an email asking you to calm down a bit."
I have reasonably high hopes for them as it was extremely difficult to find any negative reviews of them on the internet - which is pretty unheard of for anything.
Even if they're only OK, at least they seem unlikely to piss me off by saying that going over 500mb once in three years while downloading the update to Android is somehow unfair usage of a smartphone.
If you decide to go with GiffGaff, PM me and if you give my name as a referee, I'll get some credit for free. I'll double check but I might also be able to arrange for a sim for you with £5 already on it.
Sounds good. Will let you know.
These apps all look great- thanks!
I've got myself a nice quizzy thing.
BTW: Which is the best (free) anti-virus app?
How does that Shazam do it? !
Even identified Postman's Knock by Ashley Hutchings !
But failed atm on Bach Brandenburg No 1.
The Moron Test is pretty fun/frustrating.

I've got something called 'Antivirus' by AVG. It seems good and scans every time I download something new. AVG do free anti-virus stuff for PCs, so I trusted them.
Shazam does something to do with 'tags'. I have no idea what it is, but they do go on about it. Try humming something into it and see if it recognises the song
Dan
There's also an app called Sound Hound which does a similar thing to Shazam.
