NewsRevue again! Page 77

Yeah spoofing an existing song. Struggling with structure - not sure if each line should be a joke or if the lines should be a set up for a joke at the end of each verse - like a mini sketch

It really needs to have lots of funnies throughout. And it's better if your spoofed lines are smilar sounding to the original lines.

Here's an oldie of mine which was used in NewsRevue, the Edinburgh Festival NewsRevue and The Treason Show:

Our House It Won't Sell
(To the tune of I Know Him So Well by Elaine Paige And Barbara Dickson)

Nothing is so good in this economy
The bank is not completely on your side
Looks like we're moving to a wheely bin
But still the mortgage there will be too high

Looking back, I could have played it differently
With a fixed rate mortgage, who can tell
And now we have ne-ga-tive equity
Gordon Brown, we hope you rot in Hell

Wasn't it good? (The house boom)
Now it's not fine. (For sale sign)
Can't make the mortgage
Payments on time
We didn't know
How it would go if we'd known from the start
We'd have invested in art
Wasn't it good? (The house boom)
Now it's not fine. (For sale sign)
Can't make the mortgage
Payments on time

And even though we spent a little bit more on the new Conservatory
And all the laminated flooring
Our house it won't sell
It took time to paint the landing
Our house it won't sell

I tend to write mainly songs (although none of mine have made it in this week) so not sure how much good advice I can give. I think the song is important got to be a parody of a well known song that the audience will know or like or failing that a family type song you can send up. My super injuction song which was used last time in Newsrevue was based on Mary Poppins but it worked only my lyrics were super injunctions are fantastic A-listers adore us so as close and as topical and as funny (to me anyway) as I could get. Good Luck with the song writing, I actually prefer writing the songs to the sketches. :)

thanks for the advice guys - very helpful. Are we not getting the week 5 and 6 running orders? Also is the running order short or did they only do 28 that week?

Does seem a short show compared to others. I'm going to start submitting to this again now I've got a bit more time on my hands.

Government cuts maybe

Week 5 and 6? What about the other weeks? I think it's to be a long process, blahblah.

I meant week 5 and 6 from the last run. They only sent out weeks 1-4 and then skipped to week 1 of the new run. On a new topic will Newsrevue be heading to the fringe? and if so will it be a yera in review type show?

Sorry to repreat this but it may be useful. Last year Newsrevue sent tips on songwriting and the main advice was -a- Keep as close to the original rythm as possible or you ruin the fun, -b- Don't just think of one funny idea: start with the idea but have lots of laughs throughout and work it up the same way you would in a sketch.
Last time I passed this one not everyone was impressed, but it was pretty much their advice!

just emailed them and they sent me week 5 and 6 from the last run - from what I can see no ones posted them so here they are

Any particular reason for this, do you know?

Yes. The canal outside Canal Cafe flooded.

Has anyone ever sent the same sketches off to both Newsrevue and Treason? Is they a rule against it or don't they mind using the same sketches?

I don't think this situation would come up, would it? The competition's so high it would be unlikely that the same sketch would be used.
