It seems that not only can women not be funny. They can't write either!

Really? Even as a male I find it unbelievable that this kind of thing is even still a debate.. how passe to even be talking about it!
There may be fewer women writers, comedians - many other things... but that is because men had a head start of a few hundred years while women were shut out - not to mention the continuing (and rather pathetic) self-congratulatory boys club that exists in many industries.
I have read plenty of good works by women - as many as by men, easily. As for not being funny, there may not be as many women in comedy but there work is usually funnier, smarter and more sharply observational than the manufactured, cheap-laugh laden, toilet obsessed, easy-listening-opiate garbage that has been churned out by the mainstream male comedy establishment for the past five decades or so!
End rant.
VS Naipaul's a weird bugger. I remember he had a big spat with Paul Theroux - another weird bugger.

By suggesting women are inherently funnier than men you sound as dopey as people who suggest men are funnier than women.

Lol, what a dunce.
Not the best industry in which to talk down to women, either. His agent/editor/publisher (likely to be women) should dump the twat.
I believe more readers are women than men too. So all round a really good move.
He looks very wise though! I need to grow a beard and practice holding a fifty pence piece between my eyebrows.

Just my to my tastes and sensibilities, Chip - I like plenty of comedians of both genders.

This isn't some Orwellian dystopia where we all have to think the same or face the consequences!

I'm untouchable nowadays. Ayyyy!
Is he actually any good?
Most of these Booker and Noble prize winners couldn't write the wankers letter page in Razzle and rely on sponsorship for their turgid tree murder.

Probably tits.
On the other hand the guy is entitled to his ignorant opinions, but he may live to fall from his great height after that.
I'd like Liz Jones to let her Suzie loose on him.
