I seem to remember Manchester City (league cupwinners) played Burnley (2nd div champs)the year Arsenal won the double. I assume City won it but I can't be sure.
Quote: Steve Sunshine @ May 30 2011, 12:03 AM BSTI think that things changed for Chelsea when they got Hoddle & then Hoddle got Gullit
Before that they were no bigger than QPR or West Ham. apart from a swanky location.
Although they had a few quite good years with Osgood & that lot.
From around 1963 to 1973 I doubt they were outside the top 5 and had about 6 players in the 1966 pre-final squad of 40.
I don't think people give Spurs fans enough stick, about the fact that they've only won the league twice. Their fans act as if they've won it many more times. I'm sure they're cockier than, say, Everton fans, and we've won it 9 times.
Any club that wins a European trophy like West Ham should be given a bit of credit. However, domestically their record is comparatively poor. They get the coverage because a) they are a London club b) they spend most of their time in the Premier League and c) they've had a habit of having shady owners recently not to mention the Tevez saga.
There is a tendancy to think that the Premier League is the be all and end all but football did exist before 1992 and shouldn't be discounted as unimportant.
Huddersfield won 3 league titles on the trot and have also been second on 3 occasions but they're not considered a big club. Preston's league record is better than Tottenham's in that they have 2 titles (last one won in 1890) and 6 runner-ups compared to Spurs 2 and 4. It basically all comes down to when you ask the question.
It seems greatness only counts if you've won trophies historically and are currently doing well in the top flight. Nothing else counts apparently.

Well it looks like Big Sam is off to West Ham...
Shame.
I love the guy but im sorry, I hope he is a total failure there!
I see Michael Owen wants to entend his stay at United but I'm not really sure why. Maybe he thinks his body can't stand up to regular play so would rather be on the fringes with United and hope to pick up the odd medal or two.
On the point of his appearances to goals ratio it still looks pretty good with him having netted 14 in 48 appearances especially as in 33 of those he came off the bench.

Why go to a club like Bolton or Fulham and play week in week out , when he can sit on Utd's bench and earn double the money
greedy scouse prat

Er, yeah, there is that.

Also on 3: Leeds Utd, Huddersfield Town, Wolves. All bigger and better clubs than Blackburn, yet you left them out.
I suppose West Ham's popularity is a bit odd considering they have indeed failed to ever win the league title. It must be the East London thing, everything from East London is trendy, for some reason. Also, they did give the England World Cup winners their most important players. That was basically West Ham who beat West Germany that day.
They have always been a glamourous club because of this, and being at their best in the swinging 60s helped. And the legendary Bobby Moore has an awful lot to do with their popularity. I like West Ham too, they traditionally play an exciting, attacking style of football, which has also won them a lot of fans, as it has for Spurs and Man Utd.
Paul Scholes has retired, one of the top 5 midfielders ever to grace the Premiership in my opinion. Wonder who Alex Ferguson has in mind to replace him long term, there isnt that many out there (Barcelonas midfield excluded) who could perform to Scholes' level for so many games.

Sneijder?
Modric?
Apart from that, there is no one who could match Scholes. United also need a box-to-box midfielder- Jack Rodwell?

Great point. It is another example of London bias, I'm afraid.
Spurs, Everton and Villa- there is only a cigarette paper between them in terms of club size. But, Villa have been European champions which gives them the edge (and I'm a Blues fan )
Plus, Leeds United have played more Champions League games than Spurs (and maybe Newcastle, too).
I've heard people on the radio moaning about a Welsh team being in the English Premier League.
Swansea & Cardiff are welcome in the English leagues because they have always been there and (b) have worked their way up through the pyramid in the same way that Hull, Wimbledon and Wigan (etc) did.
Celtic & Rangers expect to be put straight into the Prem or the Championship. I'd welcome them into the English league as long as they started off in a suitable league (i.e Blue Square North).

What a team the 1980-81 Villa championship side was - I could've watched them all day. It was a shame Ron Saunders didn't get to lift the ultimate prize of the European Cup the following season as he'd already left having fallen out with Doug Ellis.
That was a great period for English Football. In 1981 Liverpool won the European Cup and Ipswich the UEFA Cup. The FA Cup Final was a classic with Spurs beating Man City 3-2 and Villa as I say, were awesome. Even England looked decent for a while and went through the World Cup unbeaten even if they did go out on a bit of a whimper.
If you gave me a choice between the Premiership now and the early 80s I'd take the early 80s every time. OK, the grounds weren't so great and there was more trouble on the terraces but I thought the games far more exciting back then.
