What are you gaming? Page 84

It's causing consoles to overheat apparently. Shame, as I wouldn't mind getting it, sounds rather interesting.

I got a review copy of LA Noire last week and finished it today. It's good, but it totally jumps the shark in the last five minutes when you find out Sally was behind the whole conspiracy.

Ummm

isn't that ^ a Huuuuuuuge spoiler!???!?!

Yeah, he'd better be joking or there'll be... trouble.

:D

Apparently not, now.

Dammit, I spent the last week hacking through Mass Effect 2 to complete it in time for L.A. Noire to be released and now it turns out that when I buy L.A. Noire on my way home tonight I'll have less than a day to play it!

I got LA Noire today.

So far, so disappointing.

Really? I think that's the first bad thing I've heard about that game.

There are two main reasons I say this:

1) Driving.

I hate driving games. I used to give GTA a pass because it was fun, but I gave up on GTA IV half way through because I was beginning to find all the driving repetitive and tedious.

LA Noire suffers from the same problem and more. The map is enormous, which inevitably leads to long stretches of doing nothing but slowly driving from point A to point B. Unlike GTA, you're expected to abide by the rules of the road.

It reminds me a lot of The Getaway -- faitful recreation of a city, with a faithful recreation of commuting. Dull.

2) Interrogation.

This is the game's main selling point. The facial animations, dialogue and performances are all incredibly good, of course, but there doesn't seem to be any logic to the gameplay.

You're given the option to select Truth, Doubt or Lie in response to the last thing the witness/suspect said, but the options often don't seem to bare any relation to what subsequently comes out of Phelps' mouth.

The Lie process is straightforward. If you have evidence that they are bullshitting you, you can use it to accuse them of lying.

The Truth and Doubt options appear to be completely random and interchangeable, however. Hit Doubt and sometimes Phelps lays into them, closing their lips, sometimes he plays it softly-softly and gets more info out of them, there's no way to tell how he's going to respond.

Example (mild spoiler): in The Golden Butterfly, you're interviewing a little girl about her dead mum. She says something relating to her dad's whereabouts the previous night. She looks a bit twitchy, and I'm not buying it, so I select Doubt. Wrong answer: she clams up, and I get no additional info. On a replay, I select Truth instead, and she gives me case-breaking data *while revealing she was bullshitting in her first answer*. So I was right to Doubt her, and she wasn't telling the Truth, and yet Truth was the correct response.

It's annoying as hell.

Laughing out loud I hated that game for that. Although after about a year later, I gave the game a proper chance and quite enjoyed it. Although completed it fairly quickly. But the constant bumping into slow cars and then setting on fire was just a bit gay.

The trouble with Red Dead (apart from the lack of radio on a horse)

Big problem! Some of the rides are so long and boring it gets pretty tiresome (as in Assassin's Creed). The horses also seem to be intent of running into each other when oncoming traffic appears, and when you whistle for your horse it'll run by you and, sometimes, as you run to get on it it'll walk away matching your speed. It's infuriating! I've shot one or two in anger.

Yeah, yeah - posted that before - why does your horse run away from you?!

The constant music isn't really a substitute for a radio - by the end of the game I got pretty sick of that horn solo that plays every time you ride into mexico.

Nils, make sure you do the strangers tasks as they come up - I left them to the end and they definitely enrich gameplay.

Ok, ok, keeps your pants on. :P F**k knows, but it's annoying.

Yeah, it gets very repetitive.

I'm trying to, not sure exactly how far into it I am though. Killed De Santa and I'm currently, in Mexico, helping some bloke find something so he can fly some jalopy.

You haven't finished GTA IV! You better go back and do it now. Take a cab if you hate so much.

Major problem. You mean the game won't let you run red lights? I gave up on crackdown because it wouldn't let me massacre bystanders.

I have to say I worried a bit about the whole truth/lying face acting thing. There seemed a lot that could go wrong there.

Oh yeah, sorry about your name. That's one of the flower gathering tasks - very annoying - especially when you have to gather near coyotes or grizzlys.

The treasure hunter achievement is good - have a go at that.
