DAVE - The most overused name in British comedy Page 3

I didn't know there ws such a thing. Shows how famous it is.
Quote: Eat_My_Shirts @ December 29, 2007, 12:58 AMThe best show ever created, ‘The Sopranos’ is starting on More 4 in literally a few seconds, so I don’t have time for a long moan, although ideally that is what I’d like to do.
Current British comedy sucks. And it angers me a lot. “British Comedy” and “British Sense of humour” has always been held in such high stead all over the world as being unique...etc.. But if the best we can currently do is garbage like Catherine Tate, and Gavin & Stacy..etc.. then that’s VERY SAD.
I’m much more passionate about things I hate, than the things I like. Why is that a surprise? Talking about nice things, and things you like...is BORING. Like a famous internet quote generator once said: “Nothing brings people together more than mutual hatred”. It’s true.
Anyway Sopranos is starting. More moaning later..
I'm willing to bet a billion pounds that you're a big fan of Maddox.
I am writing the sitcom which is more of an ensemble piece, but the main - ish - character is called Dave. This may be because I have a friend called Dave who is a nice, down to earth guy. I don't think there's a preponderance of sitcom Daves around. But The Office was shit because its main character was called David, true... I hear that all the time. And there are a lot of people called Dave out there anyway. Seems like a rather pointless argument to me. If you are going to try and be aggressive and interesting, I would suggest picking a subject with a modicum of interest or merit. I'm off to change my character's name to Archibald now.

errrrr....thanks for helping prove my point about "Dave" (NOT David) being the most overused name in British sitcom.

I don't really understand your point.
Is there one?
Personally, I think the word 'drink' is overused in British sitcom.
And the letter 'E'.

A bit of an odd thing to go on and on about in the first place really. Who cares if a name is used a lot? The same gags being used a lot, fair enough, but the same name? Next thread, the side parting, the most overused way of combing a characters hair in british comedy? Feet, do all characters have to have them? And how many more times do I have to switch on the TV, only to find males and females talking? lazy, lazy, lazy.
Quote: Matthew Stott @ December 29, 2007, 4:44 PMFeet, do all characters have to have them?
Zebedee, Dougal and Brian from The Magic Roundabout?

Both of the shows you mention are award winning and watched by millions. Although I'm not the biggest fan of either to call them garbage is just wrong.
What you have to realise EMS is that the world doesn't actually care what you think.
Every few years british comedy comes out with something amazing. Add that to it's rich history and that is why it is considered with such respect.
If you can't say anything nice at least respect the views of others.
So does anyone know what a "famous internet quote generator" is? I'm still none the wiser.

Thank for the sermon, father.
But why is it wrong for me to dislike something and call it garbage, if afterall the world doesn’t care what I think?
If British comedy comes out with something amazing every few years, then you’re in agreeance that in between those few years, the stuff that comes out is NOT amazing. This is what I have been saying, father.
When and where have I disrespected the views of others? And if I have, why is it wrong for me to do so? Which commandment am I breaking?
Thankyou your holyship.

I think the point being made is that because you don't like it doesn't necessarliy mean it's garbage.
After all it seems as if you don't like much comedy at all. Is the Sopranas a bundle of laughs? If not why mention it in relation to comedy?
And you still haven't answered my question.

Are you a Maddox fan? - you didn't reply to my earlier post.

What are you talking about, Chapman? I like plenty of GOOD comedy. And yes, Sopranos is very funny. Especially the relationship between Christopher Moltisanti and Paulie Walnuts. You should check it out sometime.
And what's this about a question? You mean the "does anyone know what a "famous internet quote generator" is, one? I thought that was just you attempting to be funny.

Hey wa$$up Seefacts. Sorry, I didn't know what Maddox was. I googled it. Looks like a blog of some sort? Looks interesting. I've bookmarked it...will give some of it a read later. Thanks for sharing it. Cheers.
